Battlefield 3 to Get Move and 3D Support!?

The new Frostbite 2.0 engine is definitely giving Battlefield 3 an extra coating of graphical goodness, but are the game’s developers open to adding more fancy tech to the game’s visuals? Like, for example, stereoscopic 3D? Or maybe badass motion control? DICE boss Karl Magnus Troedsson says it could happen.

Troedsson was recently asked by OPM (Official PlayStation Magazine) if there was any possibility of DICE adding both 3D and Move support to Battlefield 3′s PlayStation 3 release. His answer?

“We are thinking about it, yes, definitely.”

In the same Battlefield 3 feature, DICE art director Gustav Tilleby added:

“Of course we look at what the others are doing. At the same time, we’re looking at what we can improve. I think the technology we have is a step beyond what the others have.”

DICE and Electronic Arts have been singing the praises of their new engine for quite some time now, and judging by the videos we’ve seen it certainly looks like they’re pretty damn entitled to it.

You know I wasn’t that interested in 3D but I did have a chance to try it out at PAX East while playing Bulletstorm and I was impressed. It really does give you that extra layer which brings a new experience. If I could afford a 3D TV I would get it.

3D is certainly a big step in the gaming industry, sadly not many publishers have jumped on the bandwagon. Maybe EA will push the envelope and piss off some 360 fanboys by adding some move support in there.

3d seems to have hurt motorstorm. Hope this doesn’t happen to Battlefield..fingers crossed

It does look like SONY is really sticking with pushing 3D and some developers are starting to pick it up. I truly believe that devs need to be careful, it’s a new tech and a lot of people are not sure if it will be around or what not. It takes a lot of resources to implement something like 3D and if your a small studio and this fails ur screwed.

I can’t help but look at this game as “another shooter”. it looks pretty and uses realistic animations, but will it be fun to play.

if the online is anything like BFBC2, it will definitely be fun

The sniper video for it looks to be intense. the online will be fun if you have a few friends who focus on the team play and don’t try to go all call of duty solo etc.

@Ace. Why would you think that 360 gamer would get pissed off if they want to bring Move support to PS3 version? I would only get pissed off if the game would get delayed because of it. Making that statement that 360 “fanboys” would get pissed marks you as a “fanboy”. Yes, I am 360 gamer. Anyways great article! Cant wait to see get this one!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Why do they keep doin this. STOP it with this 3d bullshit. I might be the only one who thinks its irrelevant but honestly do we really need it. First off u have to buy a 3d tv which ranges from 5000-8000 dollars, r u kiddin me. Second its puttin a strain on polishing the graphics to its full potential. Third wearing glasses is while playing game is just plain silly and dnt say it just like wearing regular glasses cuz its not. Enough is enough. And plz dnt say well what about the 3ds. Ima say this, ive seen it, ive played it…..what nintendo has done with the 3ds is truly incredible. yes u definitly hae to be at the right angle but the 3d is AMAZING nuff said

I think I’m with most people when I say, 3D is interesting, but it should only be used in case it won’t hinge the actual game development. Also, it’s still focused on a small group of gamers who have access to 3D TV. I personally don’t and I won’t get it anytime soon, since it’s still very expensive around here.

At the same time, move would be a more useful upgrade and this definitely catches my interest. I hope it’s true. I also hope it’s done right.

Well, let’s wait and see what comes out of this.

and seeing movies in 3D … but some have gone the wrong way … in other very neat and elegant as that generated very good results.
I think that video games will be repeated.

    @Royalty32

First off…..3d tv’s dont cost anywere near 5 to 8 thousand dollars what in the world are you talking about? I recently bought panasonics top of the line 3d plasma for 2 grand. I spent months deciding what kind of tv to get and not once did i see one above 4 thousand dollars? The truth is that 3d tv’s only cost a few hundred more than there 2d counterparts when you compare apples to apples. And to all the other 3d haters out there…..3d is an OPTION if you dont like it than play your game in 2d…it doesnt alter the developement or the gameplay of the game one bit.

  15. #15 by kackle85 on March 21st, 2011

3d is the way of the future like it or not its here to stay this time around but the good thing about it is that for those who want to continue to play games in 2d that option is there.

  16. #16 by Royalty32 on March 21st, 2011

Um yes 3d tv are that expensive, especially if you get an Sony 3d tv, check again buddy. Nobody are buying 3d tv’s, in the sense of gaming its a dying technology. Sure its cool to play in 3d but who really wants to unless u plan on buying a 3d tv which little ppl are. The only reason i can see 3d being dominant is because of the 3ds. Playing games in 3d without glasses appeals way more to ppl then puttin on some glasses, that is why the 3ds will succeed. I dnt see why they havent came out with glasses-less 3d tvs in the first place.

  17. #17 by Royalty32 on March 21st, 2011

Also i never said that gameplay will take a hit i said grahpics. Which to make makes up 60% of a game being good.

How does it make me a fanboy? I own all 3 consoles…I was just stating the fact that xbox 360 players aren’t going to like the fact that ps3 owners have more optional features then them on battlefield 3, that’s all dude.

Why would anyone be mad that they can’t play a game by flailing a remote in the air?

How many times do I have to say it? Because it’s another feature that they wouldn’t have..

I own both consoles and I consider motion controls and 3D in general to be a joke. (A couple of the Kinect games are fun in small doses.) I’m not arguing here just to make you or anybody else mad, just to make that clear. This article by Roger Ebert makes quite a few good observations about 3D in movies – including my favorite:

“It is driven largely to sell expensive projection equipment and add a $5 to $7.50 surcharge on already expensive movie tickets.”

Here’s the link. I think the parallels between this article and gaming are pretty obvious.

Well, looks like my investment in the Sharpshooter and the motion controllers wont go to a total waste, I hope R3 had Move support too, cuz like i havnt been able to play kz3 with it since my move controller is ********.

  24. #24 by Emrah on March 23rd, 2011 [ 7319 Points ]

I decided, I don’t care about Move for fps games anymore. Dual shock all the way. Played a few hours today with the move. The navigation controller is not even comfortable for pressing the directional buttons, thumb needs to be completely flexed to press them. It felt just awkward. Sony should have allowed mouse and keyboard for their games, tho on separate servers.

  25. #25 by Benjamin on April 15th, 2011

I think the game supporting Move would be great.
Plus If Modern Warfare 3 release their game with the support of Playstation Move and Battlefield does not, Modern Warfare will be one step ahead of Battlefield 3.
    So? Support Move !

  26. #26 by Jcmdaddy on April 15th, 2011 [ 59258 Points ]

I don’t have a Move, nor a 3DTV. Though for those who want these features, it’s good to hear.
