Sony Closing The Agency Dev Today? What About the Game?

Just last night, game developer for the new Duke Nukem game, George Broussard, tweeted that Sony Online Entertainment Seattle may be closed today.

Here are a few of his tweets:

Word that Sony Online Entertainment Seattle is having lay-offs and that studio closure is possible

To be more clear, the lay-offs may be SOE wide and not just limited to Seattle. So, Austin, San Diego, etc.

SOE Seattle and other studios (Denver is rumored) will be closed tomorrow. Good luck to all impacted

According to CVG, SOE will be closing down Seattle, Tucson, and Denver, while laying off close to a 3rd of its staff.

Back in December, Sony gave a new release date of late 2011. Eurogamer spoke with SOE president John Smedley, who insisted it was still on for late 2011.

Smedley even went on to say that they had 115 people working on the game with 50 reserved for post-launch patches.

So what do you all think? Do you think this game is canned or moved to another studio? Either way, its bad to hear about all of the layoffs.

definitely sad to hear about layoffs, always is in the industry. hoping the game has been passed onto another SOE dev, as it did look good and looked the guys put a lot of time into it.

yeah, that sucks about the lay-offs — very sad. I don’t know anything about the agency. I watched a promo on one of the links that you provide above, and it looks like a slightly spiffed-up version of a facebook game, like zynga’s mafia wars. true? maybe I’m way off-base; I was just trying to figure out what the game’s about from the video.

With as much as Sony propped this game back in E3 2 (or 3) years ago…I can’t imagine that they would just toss one of their exclusives aside. Especially with how rare exclusives are these days. Sucks to hear of the layoffs though…sounds pretty large.

@Hester – didn’t think anything from the game was shown….(?)

yea they showed plenty from the game. Not to be confused with “Agent” in which we haven’t see anything whatsoever.

It was like a 3rd person shooter/fighter with spy abilities.

I really hope the game isn’t canned. I’d been looking forward to that one for ages. It both looked and sounded fantastic.

Rumors were true. Sony has confirmed the laying off of 205 people, closing of three studios and the cancelling of this game.

It’s always financial problems and that usually means two things:

1 – low profit with high expenses
    2 – bad administration

It sucks for everyone anyway, doesn’t matter the reason.
