Sony to Lay Off More Staff; Uncharted 3 Delayed Until 2012 – Not True – April Fools

Although not directly related to Eddie’s post about SOE Seattle closing, Sony has recently come out to say a number of staff have been laid off across all development studios, with Jack Tretton, of SCEA, stating:

Due to the unforeseen financial impact of the earthquake disaster in Japan, cuts to staff across all of Sony Computer Entertainment’s studios have been made. This, of course, has negatively affected development of even our most anticipated titles, including, but not limited to, Uncharted 3 and a number of unannounced titles. As of right now, the Next Generation Portable (NGP) has been pushed back to a possible Quarter 2, 2012 release. We are sorry to have to deliver this terrible news.

Reading through the press release, it appears that Uncharted 3 now has a release date of TBD 2012. This is terrible news for sure. Not only are some great games being pushed back, but I feel bad about all those jobs lost as well. Hopefully Sony can find a way to get back on their feet. You can read the entire press release here.

@Jay I’m not saying its not of bad taste XD, guess my being sick has affected my funny bone lol. You know what kind of detergent they don’t use in Japan? Tide.

For about 20 seconds you had me going, until you said it was because of the Earthquake. I was wondering what an Earthquake in Japan has to do with Uncharted 3.

lol, well, you could link it pretty easily. Loss of production, Sony using it’s funds to cover said loss of production, etc.

Actually, yeah, considering it hasn’t even been a month, the death toll is still mounting, the nuclear disaster is still on going, and it’s going to take years, if not decades, to even begin to recover and understand just how bad Japanese society and economy has been impacted by this, this “joke” decidedly too soon. Companies and individuals are still begging for aid and support. Just because mainstream media has ADHD and stopped covering it doesn’t mean it’s a valid punch line. Add to this the whole job cuts thing, which is also decidedly unfunny.

Take a lesson from Bungie, Blizzard, Thinkgeek and Google/YouTube. Those are good 4/1 jokes. This was just a very douche move masquerading as a “joke” and my opinion of this site has diminished significantly.

Dont believe any news on April fools lol

  14. #14 by Trev on April 1st, 2011 [ 26623 Points ]

I gotta say I agree with @Captiosus this joke is too soon, it’s still on going, although I’m sure there are plenty of people whom will still find it funny.

  15. #15 by Oly on April 1st, 2011 [ 132130 Points ]

It is definitely still on going, and will be ongoing forever. The nuclear radiation impact won’t even be completely known for decades.

That said, this post doesn’t poke fun at them in any way. It is a hoax/fake news post, based on real events.

  16. #16 by Oly on April 1st, 2011 [ 132130 Points ]

In fact, this news will most likely wind up being true in many aspects. The NGP will, I’m sure, be pushed back. The only part that is fake 100% is the announced delay of UC3.

Read the post again. There is nothing offensive or inconsiderate about it at all.

  17. #17 by Jay on April 1st, 2011 [ 83111 Points ]

See, Oly gets it. It is, in no way, making fun of people involved with the disaster, nor is it poking fun at the people who have lost jobs because of the economy. It happened to me, but you don’t see me all butt hurt about it. It can happen to anyone.

I think it would be even more offensive to not mention it at all. The only people this post will affect negatively are those who fall for it and believe it as real news.

Also, a good April Fools joke is one that people will believe to be fact, not something that is rather obviously fake. When I was a kid, April Fools was all about trickery and psyching people out. Not what these other sites are doing.

  18. #18 by Reule on April 2nd, 2011

Not funny at all. It’s not that it’s actually offensive or insensitive but where the suspension of belief is given because people actually would understand a delay given the circumstances?

  19. #19 by Jay on April 2nd, 2011 [ 83111 Points ]

Reule: but where the suspension of belief is given because people actually would understand a delay given the circumstances?

which is the point of an April Fool’s joke?

Well not all of us have money to buy a new game every month. So hearing that Some stuff has been pushed back is a good thing for some of us and well the developers, now they have time to polish their games. Uncharted 3 is a must buy, and well its good to have more polish to it. And also the NGP, well maybe they can do something more for the games, they can polish them as well.

The only bad news i hear is layoff, the hell with the games man. Think of the people.
    Don’t be selfish.

Sad news because I bet the CEOs are still getting big raises and bonuses. Hope they don’t pull more “o we need to charge more for expenses” when they just lay off all those people.

lol, I guess a few people neglected to read the comments :P. Anyway, changed the name of the article so people know now lol

    I’m not offended.

But I do wish that the internet wouldn’t get bombarded with fake news every April 1st. Just sayin’ ^^
