You’re hoping for things that are probably already going to happen, because you’re too impatient to see what they’re actually bringing to the table.

Absolutely, I'd agree that I am asking for things that are probably already in development and already going to happen anyway.

I don't think I'm being impatient or ungrateful. That would imply that I think these developments are taking too long or the quality is too poor which is completely the opposite of how I feel: I'm shocked by the rapid pace and high quality of innovation in this field.

My goal in writing this blog post is engage others like yourself in entertaining discussion about games and wishful thinking about future developments.

I also don’t really believe many people would be eager to buy a “console” just to see it replaced for a better one an year latter, worse, you’d have to get that newer model if you wanted to keep up with the new games.

This is exactly how the smartphone/tablet space works and there is tons of excitement there.

Also, tons of games don't really need bleeding edge CPU/GPU. I love dozens of 2D games that really don't need NGP-level capabilities. I love the big budget 3D games too.

Dynojunkee420
I’m a little offended by the “why, because you say so?” comment, because I was sharing my opinion

Wait, I completely respect (although disagree) with your preference. You phrased your earlier comment as a command.

You wouldn't buy a work device to play games on. Most people do exactly that. Personally, I love to sneak games while waiting in a line, at a hotel, on mass transit, etc. And I don't always want to have a dedicated gaming device for those times. I already have to carry a phone everywhere I go.

Personally, I wouldn't buy a work device to play games on. However, I would purchase a gaming device I could do work on. Ever played any games on a Blackberry?

I'm a little offended by the "why, because you say so?" comment, because I was sharing my opinion, however you're the one who wrote an article and spoke for the "people," whoever that is. Nevertheless, nothing I say goes, it's merely food for thought. Like I said, I'd never buy a work phone and expect to game on it.

However, with Sony's entry into the smartphone market, I will find an awesome gaming phone that is capable of getting work done. The handheld/smartphone gaming industry is just about to boom and you're writing as if it's been around for years and no progress has been made. You're hoping for things that are probably already going to happen, because you're too impatient to see what they're actually bringing to the table. Sony is about to put the power of the PSP into the hands of competitors with PlayStation certified, therefor increasing the progress of the industry and allowing others to one up each other even sooner. You're asking for cake before it's even been delivered.

@Darrin

The demand is real, but I'm a bit skeptical about things like this. I mean, how big is the gaming industry for sub-handheld (it'll be at the time of NGP either way, possible 3DS is also superior) quality games? I just don't see many developers investing a lot of money into this thing, when some even turn NGP releases down.

I also don't really believe many people would be eager to buy a "console" just to see it replaced for a better one an year latter, worse, you'd have to get that newer model if you wanted to keep up with the new games.

This is of course, merely my opinion on the subject and I'm no expert. As I said before I'd love if I were wrong. But in all reality, I just look at all the "greatest" IPad games and I find hard to believe such a world where all those things would come together beautifully as a side note on Sony's Phone, I just don't see that happening.

@Pedro, which is unrealistic: that real games are coming? Or external Android gaming controls?

Real games are coming. Whenever there is consumer demand (and there is) the supply of content will follow. The technology stacks and development studios are actively adapting to smart phones and tablets. I expect there to be a growing flood of games on these devices over the next few years.

External controls? Someone (hopefully sony) can make a bluetooth remote like the PS3 or just support the PS3 controller? I think this is a must. There are tons of game control screen skins for smart phones, the demand is obviously there.
