9 Months of Playstation Plus – This is What We Got

Playstation Plus is a moderately controversial subscription based service on the PS3 that people seemingly love it or hate it. Regardless of what side of the fence you are on, one can’t deny the extreme list of free stuff that you get with a subscription. Another thing I see is people asking, “Whats the point of Playstation Plus anyways? What do you get?” I never really see a good answer that could justify the unknowing to make the purchase so today I lay all the chips out on the table so we can get a good look.

Besides the games, which are listed below, there are a few services that Playstation Plus offers. The biggest and most well known is cloud game saves. This allows you to store game save files on a server so that you can access them from any Playstation 3. Whether you go to a friends house to play there PS3, you own multiple PS3′s or simply had a PS3 die on you and lost all data, your save files will be safe and accessable.

There are also other services such as automatic downloads of recently used programs, early access to most beta’s and demos, full game trials and large discounts on downloadable software.

Now that we have some of the services out of the way, lets get to the games! This list is not a complete list and the majority of these games are no longer available to Playstation Plus subscribers as they do fall off of the PSN after a certain amount of time. You will easily see that in just 9 months, a subscriber may have easily tripled or quadrupled the value of the $50 they paid for originally.

I was actually thinking of compiling a list like this myself to see how much I actually saved, or used Plus.

This also doesn’t include the discounted prices for games. I saved 25% on Dungeon Hunters this week alone.

So far for me, it’s definitely well worth the price.

I wish they’d have more “new” titles for free other than Stacking which is great by the way. I have to get a new plus subscription in a couple of months hope they have better sales/freebies this year. :)

  3. #3 by Jcmdaddy on April 17th, 2011 [ 63362 Points ]

That is an impressive list. They do offer a lot in the way of discounts, I must say. The only issue is it’s so diverse that you might not want everything that is offered. I feel like I’ve had a good amount of stuff so far, though my favorite part of PS+ is the free Qore episodes.

  4. #4 by Ajescent on April 17th, 2011 [ 2550 Points ]

This is why I don’t regret getting plus+ it’s stealthly a bargin in disguise.

  5. #5 by Kratos on April 17th, 2011

Don’t the games become deactivated when you are no longer a plus member? That’s a deal breaker. What happens 10 years down the road when you want to pull out the dusty old PS3 and half your games don’t work any more?

  6. #6 by Eddie on April 17th, 2011 [ 44542 Points ]

@Kratos Only for the PSN games. The PSOne games, minis, themes and avatars are yours forever. Even if you can’t keep them, which is better? Zero games for Zero dollars or multiple games you can play for hours on end for a year (or longer if you renew) for $50?

  7. #7 by EdEN on April 17th, 2011 [ 139651 Points ]

@Eddie: Wait, aren’t themes and avatars the only thing you can keep? I’m pretty sure my free minis and PSX games have an expiration date.

Kratos does raise a great point. Those going to E3 should definitely ask Sony about it.

As for me, I got my $50 worth on the first month and it’s been a great ride ever since. Stacking for free was a veeeeeery nice surprise and if I hadn’t bough Sam and Max I’d be really making a killing with my investment hehehe.

  8. #8 by Eddie on April 17th, 2011 [ 44542 Points ]

@Eden Nope. No expiration date on PSOne games or minis. They are yours forever. Can’t expire them when they are on your PSP and not connected to the internet anyways.

  9. #9 by premiersoupir on April 17th, 2011 [ 17020 Points ]

Also add-ons for PSN/disc-based games are free to keep forever.

I’m pretty happy with PSN+ overall. I wonder if it doesn’t discourage PSN sales for members, though. Why buy the game now when it may come down the pipe for free later? I suppose that’s the point of the initial release discounts: Maybe people can be enticed to pay for the game at 25% off.

  10. #10 by xDeFcoN_2FasT4Ux on April 17th, 2011 [ 2160 Points ]

i was happy with some of the stuff they put up, what they need is cross game chat and gives an option to seem invisible when online.

  11. #11 by James on April 17th, 2011

@Eddie I think it’s more like pay 50 bucks for a bunch of games you might want to play but then lose when you don’t up your sub — or pay 50 bucks on games you can keep and pick the ones you want ;)

  12. #12 by Markus on April 17th, 2011 [ 4322 Points ]

Yea, I’m very happy with my subscription to PS+.

50$ is nothing anyway… Especially for a yearly based subscription.

  13. #13 by Foobear408 on April 17th, 2011

I could definitely do without themes and avatars, personally I think theyre kind of corny.

  14. #14 by derrickgott007 on April 17th, 2011

I’m sick and tired of Tower Defence games. If they give out one more free tower Defence game I’m quitting PSN+.

Foobear408: I could definitely do without themes and avatars, personally I think theyre kind of corny.

I like them…well at least a couple of them. Most of them I ignore as well.

and derrickgott007… Mushroom Wars was the only one of those we got???

Edit: Oh Comet Crash. Forgot that one on my list.

  16. #16 by Dean147 on April 18th, 2011 [ 359 Points ]

Automatic Downloads and Cloud Saving are 2 great features that you get with PS Plus, for me those features are worth more than some of the games.

  17. #17 by EdEN on April 18th, 2011 [ 139651 Points ]

@Dean147: For me Cloud Saving is a great feature and something that would have gotten me to subscribe if I hadn’t before. Now I need them to offer us a 50% discount on all Bioshock 2 DLC…

  18. #18 by Jason on April 18th, 2011 [ 25926 Points ]

The 2 months I have had it are already worth the $20

  19. #19 by Royalty32 on April 18th, 2011

Ive only been a ps+ subscriber for a couple of weeks now and its nothing special. Yea you get free games but most of them are crap. Themes and avatars are useless. Come on Sony bring out the heavy hitters. Give us a HD remake of Kingdoms Hearts 1 and 2, then i will be satisfied.

  20. #20 by EdEN on April 18th, 2011 [ 139651 Points ]

@Royalty32: You should have subscribed at launch. We’ve gotten about $200 worth of free content so far only considering the games so you’re a bit late to the party. Hope you eventually get your $50 worth!

  21. #21 by Royalty32 on April 18th, 2011

Why arent the games that u got from lauch n there now. Whats up with the timed stuff. Thats kind of bogus.

  22. #22 by Eddie on April 18th, 2011 [ 44542 Points ]

Royalty32: Why arent the games that u got from lauch n there now. Whats up with the timed stuff. Thats kind of bogus.

Why is that bogus? You think free games should be free forever or that someone who joins today should get as much free stuff as I’ve gotten in 9 months?

two weeks…..two weeks? pfft. Give it time. I enjoyed most of the free games I’ve gotten and I also like the themes and avatars.

  23. #23 by Squirtbot on April 18th, 2011 [ 115 Points ]

Stuff they’ve been offering lately is good.
You DON’T keep minis or PSOne classics… only add-ons, stuff you buy discounted and avatar junk.

  24. #24 by EdEN on April 18th, 2011 [ 139651 Points ]

@Royalty32: This is a subscription based service. I imagine you’ve got cable? You can’t really complain about not having the movie you want available to watch right now because it was available last week. Same thing happens here. Why would those with the time to play all the games subscribe for more than 3 months if they could just buy a PS3, get a 3 month sub, play only PSN, PSX and minis, buy some retail games once the sub expires and continue with retail only games until a year has passed, the catalog has a lot of “archive” games and they can resub for 3 months and dive in?

  25. #25 by Pedro on April 18th, 2011 [ 39949 Points ]

    that’s a lot!

i’m planning on subscribing, but I’m still thinking about it. I’m pretty new to the PSStore, so I’m still evaluating the content and how it would serve me.

  26. #26 by Trieloth on April 18th, 2011 [ 3426 Points ]

My glorified coupon book (PS+) ****ing rocks and i will renew mine at the end of my one year. I like most of everything they give me (spyro games?meh) Its been ten… oh wait a hundred times more value than my one year xbox live sub.

Its good to see the two people that I know would complain are here. Keep up the good work. High five fellas!

  27. #27 by derrickgott007 on April 18th, 2011

    @Eddie,

    You forgot fieldrunners.

  28. #28 by Royalty32 on April 19th, 2011

Why shouldnt it stay on forever its FREE. Its not fair for the newcomers to get the crappier games than the ppl who has been on for 9 months. So what youve been on ps+ alot longer, if the game is free why does it matter.

  29. #29 by Eddie on April 19th, 2011 [ 44542 Points ]

@Royalty no…that doesn’t make sense whatsoever. These devs still need to make money. They aren’t giving their games away free forever.

You get one free game a month if you are a subscriber a month. If this service ran for 3 years, that means a person just joining would get an automatic 36 free PSN games which is just silly to even ask for. At $15 a pop…thats $540 dollars of games for being a member for 1 day…

  30. #30 by Kane112 on April 19th, 2011 [ 34177 Points ]

ah ye loving PS+ myself well worth the money ive payed for it. Also you forgot Wipeout on the list

  31. #31 by UbeRamza on April 22nd, 2011 [ 915 Points ]

You write that you could back up your saves on the cloud saves to protect them from getting lost but I put 2 saves on my cloud save and that was all that would fit. Its hardly a viable option for backing up your PS3. Other than that, I think cloud saves are pretty cool.

  32. #32 by premiersoupir on April 22nd, 2011 [ 17020 Points ]

UbeRamza: I put 2 saves on my cloud save and that was all that would fit.

That’s nutty! What game’s saves did you upload? I think we get 150 Mb of space, if I’m not mistaken, so those are some enormous saves. I don’t pay too much attention to save sizes, but it seems like most are less than 10 Mb, no?

  33. #33 by Eddie on April 22nd, 2011 [ 44542 Points ]

there are a few games that require large file sizes for the save files. I believe only 3 or 4 games do this. As long as you avoid these 3 or 4 games you can effectively save hundreds of save files to the cloud.

I also believe that all 3 or 4 of these games have unlocked save files so they can be backed up to external memory, but don’t quote me on that.

  34. #34 by EdEN on April 27th, 2011 [ 139651 Points ]

@Eddie: Checked and PSX and minis DO have expiration dates and once you send them to your PSP you’d have to change the date around so they don’t get blocked and never get online again.

Once my sub expires I’ll wait for a bit until Sony gives us the “3 free months” offer again to make the most of it and do retail games for a month or two.
