Any Legal Issues Aside, PSN Outage Will Cost Sony
Posted by Jay in Gaming Industry, PSN on April 28th, 2011
Many of us are expecting compensation from Sony for having to deal with about 2 weeks of no online gaming, but what many don’t realize is that the entity that will be most affected by the outage is Sony itself.
According to Wedbush Morgan analyst, Michael Pachter, the PSN brings Sony a total revenue of $10 million a week, $3 million of which is profit. Given that the sales will likely be halted for about two weeks, that alone costs Sony $20 million in revenue.
Now, keep in mind, that’s sales figures. Given the circumstances of the outage, consumer confidence in online purchasing will likely drop, causing a further decrease in revenue after the PSN comes back up. This trend, if it is going to happen, will likely continue for a few months from now.
But now you have to take into consideration the cost to have a third party security firm come in and investigate the whole mess. Forbes inquired a security firm, the Ponemon Institute, for how much it would cost to do such an investigation. The quote they got was a total of $318 per record for a data breach involving a criminal act.
Assuming Sony is paying a security firm that charges similar fees, each individual account will be a different record, and at $318 a piece, and about 77 million accounts, this, alone, will, theoretically, cost Sony about as much as $24.5 billion. Unless their security firm has a “purchase in bulk” discount, but I doubt Costco has such a business.
As for compensation, which many are expecting, especially those who have subscription-based services, Hulu+ users have already been given one week’s credit (and if the outage lasts a little longer, they might give two week’s worth). Sony Online Entertainment (Free Realms and DC Universe Online) is also going to compensate for lost time, including special events and other compensation (like, possibly, extension of subscription, etc).
Jurassic Park: The Game Gameplay
Posted by Jay in Jurassic Park: The Game, Media, QuickNews on April 28th, 2011
A lot of you are familiar with Telltale Games’ adventure games, and recently, they gave the Back to the Future franchise the TTG treatment. Back when that was announced, they also made mention of the Jurassic Park franchise getting it as well.
Although it is still slated for PC only, there’s still a chance it will hit consoles, and given the nearly 12 minute gameplay-only video above, signs point to an almost definite possibility. It’s scheduled for a Fall 2011 release.
And for humor’s sake, after the jump I have another video showcasing some of the stupidly funny deaths, some of which were shown in the video above.
Behind the Scenes with Hunted and Lucy Lawless
Posted by Oly in Hunted: Demon's Forge, Media on April 28th, 2011
Bethesda Softworks just released a behind the scene video of Hunted: Demon’s Forge, entitled, “Descent Into Mystery”. In the video, “Lucy Lawless and the team at inXile Entertainment delve into Hunted’s storyline and its characters.”
This game is really looking good. The co-op feature sounds really interesting, and I can’t wait to try it out. Hunted is slated for release in North America on May 31, 2011 and Europe on June 3, 2011.
The Weekly Recap – Double Time (April 10th-23rd)
Posted by Jay in Poll, Weekly Recap on April 28th, 2011

Man it has been a busy 2 and a half weeks for me. With that said, I was almost 3 weeks late with this recap, and I apologize for the wait. I know Oly wanted me to get it done so I can give him a ton of points from the recognitions. I think I should ban him for a while instead. Or dock a hundred points from him every time he posts something.
Anyway, it was a slow news period for both weeks in terms of news posted itself, although there was one really big news event last week that sent shockwaves through the blogosphere. The PSN outage and the compromisation of personal data and, possibly, credit cards. Yeah, it has garnered the attention of national news, and even the government, but at least Sony is using that downtime to make the PSN connection more secure (and hopefully more stable).
So, what about other news? We’ve had a collection of reviews a couple weeks ago, including games and hardware. EA released the extended version of the Fault Line series trailer (clocking in at around 12 minutes in length). Eddie compiled a list of all the free stuff PlayStation Plus users have gotten the 9 months it has been around so far.
Also, given the fear a lot of people have putting credit card info on PSN, Amazon now allows you to buy PSN cards online and get the codes instantly, so you don’t have to go to a retailer to pick them up. I can see that being a boost for Amazon now.

As far as the Community goes, before this week, there wasn’t much new in terms of features and the like (though, this week, we did get our points system upgraded!) With that said, I did make a walkthrough video to show you how to open your site chat into it’s own window. You can watch that video here.

We had a few giveaway updates over the past couple weeks. First of all, our Portal 2 winners have been selected! And for those who entered the Swarm giveaway, the top two in points should have gotten their download codes. Congratulations to the winners of both giveaways!

What do you think of the Steam implementation in the PS3 version of Portal 2?
| Revolutionary
Total Votes: 50 |
This is probably the first time I ever seen the poll results not switch positions from the time it was posted. It appears that most people find the idea of Steam integration, and all of its features, is revolutionary, and for good reason. Not too many games, if any, allow cross-platform play, let alone letting you have, essentially, 2 copies of a game for the price of one. Of course, thanks to the PSN downtime, many folks have been unable to link their PSN and Steam accounts to be able to play the title on both platforms. At least the PSN will be back up soon enough, eh?
Given the recent outage of PSN, this poll will focus on what people think of it in terms of how they are dealing with the security breach (as in, how they are dealing with the possible compromisation of personal data). I can’t really predict which will come out on top, since I have seen a lot of different opinions on it anyway.

Updated and Improved Points System for PS3Blog.net!

The points system has been completely re-coded from the ground up by the developers and I’ve spent the past 2 weeks getting my custom plugin working with it, and also customizing it just for us. Here are some of the new features:
- Point Notify: Whenever you earn points you will see a notification in the top right of the page showing you how many points you just earned or lost.
- What’s really cool about this is it will notify you on the next page you visit or refresh. Meaning if you were gone for a long time and came back, you would still get a points notice. For example, if you earned points while you’re away, say from a contest/bet, etc, you would get a notice for it.
- Custom Lottery/Gamble Pages: Completely customized pages for the 3 accounts you can donate points to. I’ll cover the new features lower down in this post.
- Your Lottery/Gamble Info: When a lottery is active it will show your entries and points used in the current giveaway. It will also show how many points you have gambled and won. Clicking the lottery/gamble avatar will take you to the custom page.
- Donate Message: When donating to the lottery or gamble account you can type in a message. This will only show on your personal points logs. So think of it like a note on what you donated about. This isn’t required to fill it out.
- Point Ranks: On every profile it will show a rank based on the points you have earned. Let me know if you have ideas for rank names.
- Point Logs: Logs are a little different. For example for points earned on blog posts and blog comments it will include a link to that blog/comment.
- Community Point Total: On your personal points logs at the bottom it will show points that all the members of PS3Blog.net have earned.
- Unrelated to this update, but I also put at the bottom of your personal logs page the date you joined PS3Blog.net
To access your personal points logs just click the points shown in top black menu that floats on the site or click the points link while viewing any profile.
More fun details about the custom lottery/gamble pages after the jump! I know your dying to find out, I can feel it.
