PSN Service Almost Ready; AllClear ID Plus Offered for Free [UPDATE: Letter From Stringer]

Within the past hour or so, Sony had posted an update on the outage, stating that they have begun the final testing stages of the updated PSN service, hopefully resuming it some time this weekend, if tomorrow is out of the question (no solid date yet, still). At least we know we’re very close.

Also announced, for US customers (other territories to have similar services announced soon), Sony’s complimentary ID theft monitoring will be provided by Debix, Inc, with the service ‘AllClear ID Plus’.

With this service, you will have an entire year of ID theft protection. Sony will be sending out activation emails for the service within the next few days, and the activation codes must be claimed by the 18th of June. Service will be provided for an entire year from sign-up date. What is covered by the service?
…of the Internet to detect exposure of an AllClear ID Plus customer’s personal information, including monitoring of criminal web sites and data recovered by law enforcement. If his/her personal information is found, the customer will be alerted by phone and/or email and will be provided advice and support regarding protective steps to take. The customer will also receive monthly identity status reports. Debix works with an alliance of cyber-crime experts from the government, academia and industry to provide these services.

If an AllClear ID Plus customer receives an alert, or otherwise suspects that he/she may be the victim of identity theft, the customer can speak directly, on a priority basis, with an on-staff licensed private investigator, who will conduct a comprehensive inquiry. In the case of an identity theft, the customer can work with an identity restoration specialist to contact creditors and others, and take necessary steps to restore the customer’s identity.

…to provide additional protection in the event that an AllClear ID Plus customer becomes a victim of identity theft. This insurance would provide financial relief of up to $1 million for covered identity restoration costs, legal defense expenses, and lost wages that occur within 12 months after the stolen identity event.
Be sure to keep an eye on your registration emails! As soon as we get word of other territories’ ID theft protection services, we’ll let you know!

UPDATE:
Posts just keep coming in. Howard Stringer, after the blog posted those two updates, also posted a letter, which you can read after the jump.
Dear Friends,
-
I know this has been a frustrating time for all of you.
-
Let me assure you that the resources of this company have been focused on investigating the entire nature and impact of the cyber-attack we’ve all experienced and on fixing it. We are absolutely dedicated to restoring full and safe service as soon as possible and rewarding you for your patience. We will settle for nothing less.
-
To date, there is no confirmed evidence any credit card or personal information has been misused, and we continue to monitor the situation closely. We are also moving ahead with plans to help protect our customers from identity theft around the world. A program for U.S. PlayStation Network and Qriocity customers that includes a $1 million identity theft insurance policy per user was launched earlier today and announcements for other regions will be coming soon.
-
As we have announced, we will be offering a “Welcome Back” package to our customers once our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are up and running. This will include, among other benefits, a month of free PlayStation Plus membership for all PSN customers, as well as an extension of subscriptions for PlayStation Plus and Music Unlimited customers to make up for time lost.
-
As a company we — and I — apologize for the inconvenience and concern caused by this attack. Under the leadership of Kazuo Hirai, we have teams working around the clock and around the world to restore your access to those services as quickly, and as safely, as possible.
-
I know some believe we should have notified our customers earlier than we did. It’s a fair question. As soon as we discovered the potential scope of the intrusion, we shut down the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services and hired some of the best technical experts in the field to determine what happened. I wish we could have gotten the answers we needed sooner, but forensic analysis is a complex, time-consuming process. Hackers, after all, do their best to cover their tracks, and it took some time for our experts to find those tracks and begin to identify what personal information had — or had not — been taken.
-
As a result of what we discovered we notified you of the breach. Our investigation is ongoing, and we are upgrading our security so that if attacks like this happen again, our defenses will be even stronger.
-
In the last few months, Sony has faced a terrible earthquake and tsunami in Japan. But now we are facing a very man-made event – a criminal attack on us — and on you — and we are working with the FBI and other law enforcement agencies around the world to apprehend those responsible.
-
In the coming days, we will restore service to the networks and welcome you back to the fun. I wanted to personally reach out and let you know that we are committed to serving you to the very best of our ability, protecting your information better than ever, and getting you back to what you signed up for – all the games and great entertainment experiences that you expect from Sony.
-
With best regards,
Howard Stringer

Now that sounds good, not the online part you guys but what Sony is doing lol, I feel Sony really went all out, and I would feel pretty safe of buying from the PSN store when it gets back up, now I dont thank we have to worry about anymore major hacks like this one with all of the Cyber monitoring and surveillance stuff, well maybe none for a long time untill……

The next to talk about will be the promise hackers just made to hit Sony as soon as it gos live. http://ingame.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/05/05/6593542-report-hackers-plan-third-attack-on-sony

    @Jason,

Is that off of Sonys website? if not then is probably 90% BS, I wouldnt really believe any thing unless its from Sony their selfs and or on their website stating that, and it looks to be from msnbc.com not Sony, the media loves to state crap, but you could be right Iam not trying to say your laying but the point is I dont thank thats from Sony.

  13. #13 by Jay on May 6th, 2011 [ 83111 Points ]

It’s all over the place. Sony hasn’t made an official response regarding it, but if they tried to do something, the FBI and the like have their eyes on it.

  14. #14 by dave on May 6th, 2011

Well yeah they be pretty dumb too do it right now, maybe a year from now, but not when Sony and Home Security and Government has their nose in it, lol wow if they did jezz how dumb can one get or two or three etc…I mean they couldnt do it on the PSN I dont believe, but maybe on Sony TVs since todays TVs can be hooked up to wireless or cable, but I dont thank through PSN it self, besides I dont thank Sony would have this kind of hack or this bad of one anymore, this hack open Sonys eyes I would hope, to make sure this bad of hack would never happen again, its properly a scare but we will see.

It isn’t “supposed” to be up actually. Sony has still yet to give us a solid day. It “could” be up today though. Sony said they still are aiming to get it up this week or this weekend. that means anytime in the next 72 hours-ish.

i’m completely baffled by people saying they’re removing their credit cards and going to use psn cards. If someone hacks their network and gains access to a psn card, well, you can say goodbye to that money. Someone hacks the network and gains access to my Amex card, guess what, amex will not force me to pay anything thats fraud. They’re fairly quick with fraud notices, and will flag things fairly quickly. If i had a psn card, any money i had on my account or with my psn card that’s on the account is kissed goodbye.

Lmao! That’s the most stupid double xp weekend ever! Who whas the idiot that came up with that ideia for the PS3?

Personally, I just hope I get an email when it’s finally up so I can hurry and change my password, other then that, I don’t play on weekends so I don’t care.

You can’t steal PSN cards or money found in someones wallet. so PSN cards are 100% safe. Even if you could somehow transfer the money to your own wallet, its like painting a bullseye on yourself.

However removing your credit card won’t help as your purchase history stores the same information.

    Also

“We will be offering PSN users the opportunity to select two PS3 games from a list of five, as well as offering PSP users the opportunity to choose two games from a list of four. We will let you know exactly what games are available very soon. “

  28. #28 by jmajestyjersey15 on May 6th, 2011

damn a little worried about the whole e-mail confirmation we suppose to do. In my main account i use the most on the playstation is signed under a yahoo email that was never created in yahoo. well it took it on the playstation but i never created on yahoo idk but i hope thats not a problem now. Does anyone have an answer for this?

  29. #29 by dave on May 6th, 2011

    @jmajestyjersey15,

lol I would just open a email at yahoo and use the same email address that you used to sign up on PSN other then that I dont know, why would you have a fake email in PSN? they send stuff and up dates etc… and if you say something like, well I did it in case something like this happens etc…then I dont know what to tell you, but if you cant or dont remember your email then call Sony them selfs and see what they can do for you when the day comes when the PSN is up and running, but with all this going on I dont really thank anybody have to worry about your email or address and CC could have been stolen for ID Theft cause they are missing one very big thing your SSN if any thing cancel your CC and thats that.

  30. #30 by Royalty32 on May 6th, 2011

  34. #34 by JD23 on May 6th, 2011

Dude calm the hell down okay it hasn’t been that long!! If you are that in-need to play against online people (some of which are 8 year olds) then go ahead and buy an xbox and it’ll be up by Sunday so chill.

  35. #35 by Royalty32 on May 6th, 2011

Yea Frost calm dwn, 360 has no good exclusives this yr besides Gears 3. Listen i was about to do the same thing but then i realized what do i want more Gears 3 or Uncharted 3 and it was a no brainer U3 is definitly more important to me than Gears. Keep ur ps3 and jus buy a 360 there only 199.99. I disagree with JD23 it has been that long. Two weeks is a long time not to be able to be online. Its sucks and sony only giving 1 month free ps+ is not ok well its ok but they should definitly throw something else in the pot.

  36. #36 by JD23 on May 6th, 2011

You are right it is kind of long, I myself play black ops a couple times a week and it hasn’t been the same but we do have to be grateful to a service that has provided free online services for so long rather to pay $50 a year on, that I can buy, for example, Uncharted 3 almost.

  38. #38 by jmajestyjersey15 on May 6th, 2011

  39. #39 by jmajestyjersey15 on May 6th, 2011

i only really play Blk Ops thats the only think i really miss from the psn, oh and pissing people off i love that too.

The PS3 community might well be better off if some of the above upstanding members of society were to board the XBOX boat. Add your voice to the chorus of “gay” that provides the soundtrack to Halo and the like.

The outage sucks for sure. How many ways can different people say the same damn thing? I am taking out frustrations by kicking the hell out of the CPU on Gladiator Games with the Move. Just picture Sony upper management or the hackers and bring the pain. Its really relieving. A few rounds in the Gold trophy level and you’ll be worn out and not worrying about the outage.

  44. #44 by Misco1 on May 7th, 2011 [ 115 Points ]

First system I have played online and thought it was great, not so sure now if they cant at least tell us a true time. If its a month or two so be it but dont say sometime this week and then we didnt know the intrusion was that bad SMH, get a clue your supposed to be the biggest thing around. Im thinking the top two people at Sony are/should be in danger of losing more than sleep = try jobs.

woot,I can finally comment..i’v been reading the psn sites comments since this whole things started and i gotta say, theres a bunch of cry babies in the gaming community..WOW that fealt good

SMH………………..I just read an article on cnet.com saying that sony needs more testing b4 psn is up and running again. This is really starting to tick me off. Is 2 weeks not long enough. PSN is going into its 3rd week of being dwn. My faith is slowly but surely slipping away from the ps3. Im seriously goning to have to think about if i want this console or not. This is BS!!!

2 weeks to physically change locations of an entire server, rebuild it, develop an new software for the PS3 and impliment up to date security protection for a 102 million person database? Hell no 2 week is not long enough….It probably took them 2-3 years to build the PSN server the first time lol.
