Sony Confirms PlayStation 4 | PS3Blog.net

This image is fan made but, it still looks pretty damn awesome.

With Wii 2 due to be shown at E3 and hints of new Microsoft hardware abound, it was only a matter of time before Sony dropped hints about its plans for the next gen. Sony’s executive vice president and chief financial officer Masaru Kato has confirmed that the company is putting together a “future platform” – the almost assured PlayStation 4. He referred to Sony’s next console during a conference call to investors when asked to clarify an increase in research and development costs, according to Eurogamer.
Kato said:

“For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life but this is platform business, so for the future platform – when we’ll be introducing that product, I cannot discuss that – but our development is already under way, so the costs are incurred there.”

The news contrasts claims made by Sony Computer Entertainment chief Kaz Hirai earlier this year, who said that the firm was “not deliberating” a PS4.

  1. Wow so soon. PS3 is in its prime and there are still some amazing games coming out in the bear future. 2014, PS4 here i come.

  2. Whoops i meant near future not bear future. Silly me lol!!!!

  3. Yeah wow I look for this to cost about $1,200.00 cause the PS3 it self when it first came out was $800.00, it took me about 3 years before I even got the PS3 cause of that, so I guess 4 years before I get the PS4. The pic. above looks cool they should make the PS4 just like that pic. lol.

  4. I think this time around they will keep the cost in mind since that is 1 of the main reasons why no one was buying a PS3 was because it was an arm and a leg.

I am also some what torn on if this is all just publicity or not. They stated earlier that there are no plans for a PS4 for yet and now that the Wii 2 is coming out and an Xbox 720 is in the works all of a sudden the PS4 is in the works.

  5. Well, from the looks of that I’d say 2 – 3 years until it’s released. Apparently they’ve just began research, so it could take a while.

    Good news anyway…

  6. Yea all good news.

  7. A little bit of “duh” news really. They most likely have been working on PS4 ideas since the PS3 launched.

  8. If they used updated versions of current PS3 tech, the cost won’t be nearly as high, since when the PS3 launched, it launched with all sorts of untested tech. A Cell 2.0, RSX 2.0, etc, will also allow for backwards compatibility built right into the hardware itself, much easier than when the PS2 hardware was being built into the original PS3s

  9. Yeah maybe I went over the price on my last comment, but PS4 might have DX10 and or DX11 like the PC and if I remember right the PS3 is a DX9 so I would thank they would put in at least DX10 for the graphics that makes all the world difference in a game.

  10. To be honest I think about it and I say that the PS4 should not come out till around like 2016 or 2017. Main reason is that I’ll be out of college. 🙂 Cuz I know I will get distracted like crazy.

  11. Yourgor:

Sony also confirmed that they won’t be investing the the same amount of resources into their next system like they did the PS3. Cell, Blu-Ray, all of that contributed to the system’s initial hefty price tag so if Sony’s not going to sink tons of money into future consoles I don’t expect it to cost as much as the PS3 did.

This could also mean that their next system won’t be a big leap above the PS3 like it was with the PS2.

  12. I hate to say this but i think sony definitly has to out-do the ps3 in everyway just to keep up with the competition. Sony better believe that M$ next console will defintly be better than the 360 and ps3 in everyway. Im not to much worried about Nintendo console cuz as soon MS and Sony bring out there new consoles nintendos will feel outdated. Everything just has to be better. Thats how i see it anyway.

That’s my thoughts exactly. Increase the ram of course, but stick to XDR.

  14. From a hardcore gamers perspective I will weigh the cost of the PS4 when it arrives along with the games I would want and then see if I can fix my pc up for less. I think the next generation may be my time to step back and save $$$.

  15. i don’t buy it.

  16. Sony filed a patent for an external device that increases ram and cpu for the ps3. Where is it??????????

  17. Damn. I only got a PS3 in June of last year. Now they’re springing a PS4 on us already?

Well, looks like I’m going to have to wait for the PS5 to come out before I can afford a PS4.

And the PS4 better have backwards compatibility with PS3, PS2 and PS1 games.

Rant over. Anyway, this is good news. Even if it does come out in the near future, I won’t be worried. I have more than a large backlog of games for both PS2 and PS3, and I’m going to be saving for a new computer for college. So, it’ll be awhile before the PS4 comes out for me.
