Jack Tretton Talks About PlayStation 4

Jack Tretton is the president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America, for those of you who may not be familiar with his name. During the E3 2011 expo, Mr. Tretton, along with Kaz Hirai, talked about upcoming titles such as Uncharted 3 and Resistance 3. They also presented the PlayStation Vita to the world. In an interview with Forbes, Jack Tretton discusses how he and his company are not afraid of competition and are ready to back Vita throughout. Here is an excerpt from the interview.

When will you start talking about the PlayStation 4?
.
PlayStation 3 is really just hitting its stride. And technologically, I don’t think it’s possible to provide any advancement beyond what we have. What we’ve seen from the competition is trying to add features that already exist in PlayStation 3. We invested heavily in that, we rolled a very heavy rock up a steep hill, through the launch period. But now I think that all pays off, and we’ve got a long run way behind it. So, I wouldn’t look for any discussion of a next generation PlayStation for quite some time.
.
I think there’s ground to be carved out for everybody. But I didn’t see anything about Nintendo’s announcement that said ‘Oh, we’d better get working on rolling out a new PlayStation here pretty soon.’
.
Our attitude is kind of ‘welcome to the party.’ If you’re looking at being a multimedia entertainment device, if you’re looking at high def gaming, that was 2006 for us.

Rest of the story here.

idk, I think they might be trying to throw someone (MS) off because I am sure Microsoft is already cooking up something hardware wise, and with that I think Sony is already developing the PS4 because they know this as well, and don’t want to be a year late for the party again. I think what they can do as far as that goes, and to be ready for launch when the neXtBox launches, is to develop the console and have it ready every year, and if Microsoft doesn’t announce, they can upgrade system specs for a launch the following year; just have to upgrade SDKs as well, until specs are finalized.

And lol at the “welcome to the party” statement about Wii U. EdEN won’t take too kindly to that one.

I don’t get the talk about Playstation 4 now, I mean we all know it will be coming one day, so its not a surprise that it exists. I think it will be 2014 when it will release.

Agreed. 2014 sound about right. PlayStation Move have’t shined yet. I didn’t get Move and I am not planning to until I see something appealing. Developers haven’t scratched the surface of what the PlayStation Move is capable of. Sony need to advertise this technology and push more decent Move titles. Sorcery makes a good example of what I am talking about.
We have Vita coming out soon as well. More titles that integrate the Vita/PS3 connection are in development. Hideo Kojima talked about Transferring, Saving The Same Game On PSP, Vita and PS3. This concept of playing your game anywhere, anytime will be integrated in future titles, may be a new MGS … I am sure more titles will follow this concept.
What I am saying is: The PS3 along with The Move and Vita have a few years ahead to reach the potential Sony has for them. Lets also not forget that big multiplayer titles on this generation consoles will keep us busy for another year. Big titles such as BF3 and MW3 will be on the PS3 for a long time, well at least till next year.

First of all, the title of this post should be “Jack Tretton Doesn’t Talk About PlayStation 4″.

Now, moving on, I agree with Jay. This really seems like it’s just a comment to make people turn their heads and look somewhere else.

There have been rumors of a new XBox to be shown next year on E3 and I doubt Sony isn’t upping their game too. It doesn’t mean it’s going to release 2012, but at this point a new console should be well under way, but with many things yet to be decided. Possibly it’ll be the last one released to get some kind of upper hand.

“Now introducing Playstation Move, a brand new piece of technology just for your PS3!” Hey Sony, welcome to 2006!

“Now introducing the Vita, featuring a touchscreen for your portable entertainment” Yeah, 2004 called, and he’s not very happy.

“Hi my name is Eden and I’m the resident Nintendo spokesperson” :D

Hey, buddy HD consoles from 2006 called and said Nintendo U is a little late to the party!

    I win! Ha!

@Pedro: Now, now Pedro. Let’s not forget FULL HD is 1080p and pretty much 80% of all PS3 games run at 720p or less. Sony has been doing “sorta” HD since 2006 and FULL HD only for Blurays.

  9. #9 by Pedro on June 21st, 2011 [ 39949 Points ]

Do you really think Nintendo U will be any different?

It’s the lazy developers fault! Don’t blame the console.

    no….just….no….

Anything above 480 lines of resolution is HD. 1080p is just the highest that is commercially offered. No such animal as “Full HD”.

btw…let me know when Nintendo decides to get a decent online structure up and going so 2002 can be notified. Voice chat from around then is also waiting. Friends list just gave up hope.

also, as I said in the chat, support for 1080P HD doesn’t mean that every game will be 1080P. Upscaled, sure, but I can also upscale my PS3 to 1080P for every game through my A/V receiver, but other than that, since it’s got basically the same capabilities as 360/PS3, a lot of games will likely only run at smaller resolutions natively, especially the resource-hungry games.

@All: Let’s just wait until E3 2012 because before that we can all be speculating for days and days and daaaaays hehehe.

I’m excited at the prospect of a PS4. But I’m very happy with my PS3 at the moment. Sooo many games and sooo little time is my problem. So I actually hope that the PS4 is quite a few years away.

this makes me laugh cuz not only did they just recently come out with motion control calling it new a revolutionary when nintendo came out with motiong in 2006 AND nintendo had touch screen since 2004 and nintendo had anolog controls first but hes also acting like he has a choice not to release the ps4 but realy there just recovering from the over 6 million lost on the ps3 when it first came out and i dont like jack becuz he dosent talk about sony’s products he just likes to make nintendo look bad wich nintendo did make ALOT more than the ps3
