Naughty Dog Says PS3/Vita Can Do What Wii U Does

Now I do agree that the PS3 & Vita could do what the Wii U does. Question is will developers make it happen? My guess is probably not or very few games will do it. Because they need to rely on consumers to own a PS3 & Vita vs the Wii U where they just need to buy the Wii U console/controller. For that reason alone I don’t see very many Wii U type games using the PS3/Vita combo.

Below is part of a interview that NowGamer did with Justin Richmond the Game Director at Naughty Dog.

Obviously you won’t develop for Wii U, but I want to get your thoughts on the hardware. Does the console spark your imagination in any way?

Justin Richmond: To be honest with you, the idea of it is very, very cool. But there’s nothing that the Wii U has that the Vita and PS3 doesn’t. You know, it’s an interesting piece of technology, and I’m interested to see how people use it.

I’m not completely sold yet. That the screen isn’t multi-touch, that’s a little weird. It seems there are some very strange holes in it, but to be fair, last time I was sceptical of the original Wii, and look at how that did. I’m sure that he games they make for Wii U will be amazing.

What are your thoughts on this?

Of course it can! But here’s two reasons why it’s not THE SAME:

    1) Price. Wii U controller could go as high as $99 but that’s about it. A Vita is $250 and $250 is waaay high for just this extra ability.

    2) Developer support. What is standard on the Wii U would only be, again, an extra that developers would have to take into consideration.

Am I glad that the possibility is there? Yes since I’ll eventually get a Vita in a couple of years. But that’s about it.

Go back and watch Kojima interview in Konami Pre-E3 show. He talked about something called “Transfarring technology”, its basically taking your saved game from the PS3 to the Vita on the go and better yet its not limited by range as the case for the WiiU.

I stand corrected, This technology will be available for the PSP and Vita! You will be able to use it with the Metal Gear Solid HD collection.

Captain_CHEETO: better yet its not limited by range as the case for the WiiU

exactly. The Wii U has to be within range of the system to work. Whereas, the Vita can be used anywhere. Although that would limit certain games where you also need the television for some of the Wii U functionality.

Plus, the Vita’s features using this type of setup could potentially be better as well, as the Vita has a multi touch screen, while the Wii U controller only recognizes one touch (although I would assume that’s a design and cost decision, especially since it is just a controller).

Well, that is cool, but as you said, I just don’t see many developers doing it.

As Eden said, you have to consider the costs and obviously not everyone will buy the vita, so you couldn’t have anything important, otherwise a lot of gamers might be losing out and that wouldn’t make people any happier.

@Jay: It BETTER have more features available for taking your PS3 games on the go with the Vita since we’re talking about an extra $150 investment.

For once I agree with Eden although I disagree on his $99 remark. I think it will probably retail about $129.

with that said…The Vita would be able to do everything the Wii U does and leagues better. Just mere processing capability, multi-touch and other control schemes. Not to mention having analog sticks rather than that slider button…..

As far as leaving multi-touch out being cost efficient…it might save a few cents really per unit.

@Jason didn’t you see my other post…MH for Vita is all but announced now. Capcom is working on an unannounced title that is easily guessed due to its popularity in Japan…Reeves from Sony said that today.

@Eddie: Sure, price on Wii U controller could be higher but when you do the math for what is included it could be $99 if Nintendo decides to make like $5 only per controller. Waiting for their Nintendo Conference in september before we continue with the speculation hehehe.

Ya bud but I think its Monster Hunter 3 which Im getting on ps3 and already have on psp. I wish Sony would just take a chance and get behind capcom on a ps3 exclusive already. At this point I will gladly take freedom unite remake just to play something in english again :(

maybe we could wait for Monster Hunter 4 ;;)

I believe there is potential for the combination of the two. However the Vita will need to sell some significant numbers for the developers to chance it. Maybe some small options to start off with.

I believe the Vita will sell pretty well and I’m working on a story right now to see if there is telltale evidence of this. My contact is crunching some numbers so I’ll post the story once I get all the info sometime in the next week.

Isn’t it supposed to be Wii’s successor. And it’s a PORTABLE? Just makes no sense what direction Nintendo is going here. Unless it’ sjust another Portable system. I haven’t really kept in touch with nintendo after Wii. I love the fact that PSP vita can play PS3 games though. At least that what Cheeto said.

  18. #18 by Eddie on July 17th, 2011 [ 44542 Points ]

Wii U isn’t “portable” really. Still needs to be in the vicinity of the base system.

  19. #19 by Jay on July 17th, 2011 [ 83111 Points ]

technically, wouldn’t the Wii U be considered the base system and the controller just a controller?

  20. #20 by Eddie on July 17th, 2011 [ 44542 Points ]

umm not sure I follow. the touch pad is the controller but it needs to be in the vicinity of the base unit to work.

  21. #21 by Jay on July 17th, 2011 [ 83111 Points ]

the way you worded your previous statement suggested that the controller was called the Wii U and not the main unit itself.

  22. #22 by EdEN on July 18th, 2011 [ 142696 Points ]

@All: Wii U is the next Nintendo console. Controller has a touchscreen and all buttons currently available in their Wii Classic Controller and it also has speakers, gyroscopes and a camera. Games played on the console can be streamed (video only) to the controller for you to play in case someone needs the TV. Range is still unconfirmed but 20 feet seems to be the range most agree on.
