DC Universe Online Is Going Free-To-Play

Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE) announce today, that beginning late October, players will be able to download and access DCUO for free on the PS3 and PC. SOE is introducing three new access levels to the game: Free, Premium and Legendary. All three levels will provide access to open world gameplay and missions, general game updates and fixes to the game, with each level offering different game options and benefits.

This is great news for players like myself, who couldn’t see spending $14.99 a month for a game I didn’t have time to fully utilize.

All three levels provide access to the current game, but allow differing tiers of convenience and flexibility. The levels are:

Free: New players will now have access to the current gameplay in DC Universe Online (including Gotham City, Metropolis, and all current raids and alerts), with the ability to create two characters, join a league and many other benefits. Free level players will be able to purchase downloadable game packs/updates, additional character slots, powers and more through microtransactions.

Premium: Any player who has spent at least $5 USD (including former paid subscribers and new players who have purchased $5 of in-game items) will qualify for the Premium access level. Premium level players will have more benefits available to them than the Free level player, including additional character slots, additional inventory slots, and higher cash limits. Downloadable adventure packs, additional character slots, and more can be purchased in-game.

Legendary: Maximum features and benefits are included at this level. Loaded with enhanced additional features, Legendary access will be available for a $14.99 USD monthly fee and includes all DLC packs at no cost, more than 15 character slots, more than 80 inventory slots, the ability to form unrestricted-sized leagues, and many other benefits.

I was just at PC and richardson and saw DC for $40, so I am guessing they will pull all hard copies from stores??

Crazy. Will this upset early adopters? I guess the game has been around for a while, so maybe current players will mainly be happy to see an influx of fresh blood.

All I want to know is Free give out trophies? Not like Bullshit FreeRealms making me get that crap on my history and you can’t get trophies. Well in truth my fault for even downloading that crap, but I’m used to the “Free is Free” mantra XD

The differences between Legendary and Free are pretty drastic. I BETA tested this and I’ve played quite a few subscription based MMOs. Quite frankly the new subscriptions plans offered don’t encourage me to play at all. Not even for free.

eh being free may jump in on this tho i was never a big fan of the Beta

Mmm, so now I might be able to get a CE at $30? Interesting.

What I REALLY want to know is if I’ll be able to get TROPHIES from the free model…

No trophies for the free versions.. only the 14.99/monthly one..

“PS3 requires that only paid games reward trophies. Legendary access players will still be able to earn trophies though.
    Lorin”

“Yes. All past subscribers will come in at the Premium level.
New trophies are limited to Legendary access members as required by PS3 rules. However you will still retain any trophies you have earned in the game.
Legendary players will have free access to all DLC, including Fight for the Light. Premium and Free players have to option to purchase DLC.

    Sums it all …

still not interested, does this sound like a desperate measure?

  18. #18 by EdEN on September 20th, 2011 [ 142681 Points ]

@Oly: Thanks for the info. Imagined as much. Well, I COULD find a two month block once the next DLC releases and just get two $14.95 months or maybe a 3 month block and go for platinum.

Can we use a hard copy of the game to play or does it have to be a download from PSN? I’m pretty sure the retail game is just the client dumped into Bluray and you’ve got to copy it to the HDD, right?

    @Pedro
Completely agree. Whenever an MMO goes F2P or opens up something like this, I just get the impression it wasn’t good enough to hold people’s attention so they needed an act of desperation.

other than WOW, almost all MMOs now sooner or later move to free2play

  21. #21 by Cheeto on September 20th, 2011

Guild Wars, is by far, the best MMO i’ve ever played, it was, and still is, free to play since day one! Guild Wars 2 is destined to be one of the greatest MMOs in history and it also will be free to play … day one.
