Square-Enix recently announced that a few of their PS2 masterpieces would get HD Remasters for both the PS3 and PS Vita. Each remastered game (Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy X-2, Kingdom Hearts Final Mix and Kingdom Hearts: Chains of Memories) will feature upgraded visuals, a few new features and bosses, and their own trophy list!
I searched the web to sum up what is known about those titles and compiled the data in this post, which is meant to be an extension of what Eddie wrote a few weeks ago.
Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD
FINAL FANTASY X/X-2 HD Remaster – Announcement Trailer
One of their most awaited HD Release is Final Fantasy X HD which have been announced back at the 2011 Tokyo Game Show. Since that event, we’ve had very little information on the project (to an extent that many gamers were wondering if the project had simply been canceled).
Luckily, at the recent PAX East event, Square-Enix confirmed that not only the game is still in development, but also announced that the game will be bundled with an HD Remaster of Final Fantasy X-2 on the same PS3 disc! A PS Vita version of both games will also be released at the same time, but Final Fantasy X HD and Final Fantasy X-2 HD will be sold separately because of the Vita’s game cartridge size.
An official release date has not been announced yet, but Square-Enix confirmed that the collection will be available this year for $39.99. Good enough for me!
Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD ReMIX
Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD ReMIX – Jump Festa 2013 Trailer
Kingdom Hears 1.5 HD ReMIX is the HD Remaster of 2 games, just in time for the franchise’s tenth anniversary: Kingdom Hearts Final Mix (which is an extended version of Kingdom Hearts released exclusively in Japanese territory), and the dungeon crawler Kingdom Hearts: Chains of Memories. This collection is awesome as is, but Square-Enix has also decided to include “HD Remastered Cinematics” of all the cutscenes from the DS exclusive Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 days!
This collection will be the perfect occasion to replay those games and revive the strong (and very complex) story elements from the Kingdom Hearts series, back from the beginning!
Rumors seems to be pointing to a fall release, with a price tag of $39.99, and there doesn’t seem to be any plans to release this collection on the PS Vita yet.
Speculation and Rumors
In the Japanese version of Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD ReMIX (which has been out since last February in Japan), some people have noticed that a few scenes from other games in the Kingdom Hearts franchise appear in the ending credits. Those scenes are from Kingdom Hearts II, Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep (PSP), and Kingdom Hearts: Re-coded (DS). Could this be hinting to a future Kingdom Hearts 2.5 HD ReMIX? I sure hope so!
I’ll go relatively off-topic with this, but while talking about rumors, I’ve been wondering what had happened to Final Fantasy Versus XIII, which have been announced 7 years ago. Square-Enix confirmed multiple times that the title is still being worked on, but we haven’t had any tangible information since the last trailer in 2011. For now, the rumors seems to be pointing to this game now being a PS4 exclusive and renamed Final Fantasy XV. I’m pretty sure we’ll get more information about this at the next E3 (Square-Enix did tell us to be excited to this year’s E3 when the PS4 was announced!)
So, what do you think about those Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts HD Remakes? Will you be purchasing (or pre-ordering) them? Will you prefer to wait for a price drop, or completely skip them? Let me know in the comments below!
