Spike’s Video Game Awards 2012 “VGA 10” Event Photos plus Metal Gear 25th Anniversary After Party

December 19, 2012 | | 10 Comments

For some odd reason, Metal Gear’s 25th Anniversary celebrations are still going on. Spike’s VGA 10 after party was actually the after party for the awards show coupled with MG 25th anniversary. Yes it’s strange as Konami already threw a party for them at PAX PRIME Seattle which I attended as well.

In any case, the event was filled with surprises. Oly and I met great people among the industry and got to party with the whole Konami crew. As expected, the awards show was long and once again over produced. Never the less, we still had a great time! Here are the pictures!

[PS3 Review] Guardians of Middle-Earth

December 19, 2012 | | 14 Comments

Fear and intimidation. These are the words that best describe the feelings I had when it comes to this genre; Multiplayer Online Battle Arena, MOBA for short. My first encounter with Guardians of Middle-Earth was at last summer’s E3 2012. At first, I thought it was a World Of Warcraft type of game. I never really bothered to even research or find out for myself what it is, until they sent us a review copy. This game changed how I feel dramatically. I play the game now more than ever and I’m not even the type to indulge these fantasy type of games. Once you get past the fear and intimidation and really take time to learn the basics, you will have a ton of fun.

VGA TEN: “Journey” & “Borderlands 2” Leading the Way

November 15, 2012 | | 8 Comments

Spike TV today announced it nominees for its annual Video Game Awards show dubbed “VGA TEN” this year, celebrating it’s 10th year. Oly and I were honored to cover the event for you last year, and this year we are doing it again! The highly anticipated event is expected to draw a crowd of gaming fans from all over.

This year’s show will be hosted by Samuel L. Jackson, who’s recent appearance in last summer’s record breaking movie, “Marvel’s The Avengers” as Nick Fury is nothing short of awesome! He previously hosted the VGAs 3 times in 2005-2007.

“I’m thrilled to once again preside over the biggest night of gaming,” said Jackson. “And to all the gamers out there – you better circle the date right now and not make any plans that night – you don’t want to be that one guy among your friends who misses this show.”

This year’s confirmed musical talent will be Grammy award winning artists Linkin Park, performing “Castle of Glass” as featured in “Medal of Honor: Warfighter”, as well as a performance by Tenacious D.

Leading “VGA TEN,” with seven nominations each are “Borderlands 2″ and “Journey” Ubisoft’s “Assassin’s Creed III,” is not far behind with six nominations while Bethesda Softworks’ “Dishonored,” EA’s “Mass Effect 3,” and Telltale Games’ “The Walking Dead: The Game” all have five nominations each.

Below are several of the nominees and categories for Spike TV’s “VGA TEN.” For a full list, please go to VGA.spike.com.

[PS3 Review] Zone of the Enders HD Collection

November 8, 2012 | | 5 Comments

My interest level for Zone of the Enders HD collection was very low at first. When Konami announced that the collection will include the demo for Metal Gear Rising Revengeance, my level of interest shot sky high. The original ZOE was released along the same time as the launch of the PlayStation 2. This time around, the HD re-release is also accompanied by Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner, the sequel to the original.

I don’t remember much of ZOE. I remember seeing a magazine ad and all I could focus on was the Metal Gear Solid 2 demo announcement. I did buy the game when it was first released, just for the Metal Gear Solid 2 demo, and tossed the ZOE disc to the side. ZOE is as basic as it can get. Storyline is much like any other anime that was produced. Typical simple boy stumbles upon the Oribital Frame (the giant robot in the series), tragic stuff happens, boy becomes hero.

But what ZOE lacks in story it makes up for in gameplay. The controls are so easy to master that a young kid can play it. Although up-converted to HD, the graphics are still blocky and you have to endure cut scenes similar to PlayStation 1. It is so hard to force yourself to time travel, so to speak, to play such old games, however if you want to up your street I.Q. regarding Hideo Kojima’s games, then you cant go wrong with this one.

Event Coverage: Maxim And Rock The Vote Celebrate The Launch Of Assassin’s Creed 3

October 29, 2012 | | 5 Comments

Note the official title of this event: Maxim and Rock The Vote Celebrate the launch of Assassin’s Creed 3. By the title you can just tell this is not dedicated towards who matters most, the fans that buy and support this series. As soon as I set foot in front of the venue, I knew that this event was more a “show” than a celebration. Just look at the red carpet photos and you can tell whoever organized this event wanted it to have some kind of hit summer movie, red carpet premiere vibe. Sure it had Movie and TV stars, but what does that have to do with Assassin’s Creed 3? I understand if it would have been the voice actors, however it was exactly the opposite. Most of the attendees were just your typical Hollywood club hoppers who were there for the free booze. I am all about complimentary drinks and open bar, however this was just ridiculous. The event was totally private and you had to be invited.

Event Coverage: PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royal L.A. Beatdown

October 25, 2012 | | 10 Comments

Sony Santa Monica Studios and SuperBot Entertainment together with iam8bit celebrated the upcoming title PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royal with a community event in Los Angeles. Dubbing it “LA beatdown” the event had a gallery showcasing “personal” items from some of the fighters. Items such as Sweet-Tooth’s Mask and Dynamite, Sackboy’s Cardboard rocket, and Heihachi’s hair gel (yes, hair gel).

Attendee’s were treated to complimentary drinks, a chance to speak with the developers, game play stations, and took photos in a photo booth with various props from the games characters. Among some of the notable attendees were former Capcom, now Sony Santa Monica studio’s lead game designer Seth Killian, as well as SuperBot Entertainment’s game director Omar Kendall and their president Chan Park.

I spoke with Seth Killian and he did confirm that the 20 characters are the only characters that will appear in the game. I tried grilling him about the final boss however he remained stoned face and said nothing. I was observing game play and one of the stages had Metal Gear Ray (Revengeance version), crashing through the background. (Where have I seen that before?)

I had a great time and it was finally nice to meet some of the Sony PR that I usually talk to through email. Special mentions goes out to my good friend Andrew costuming as Nathan Drake, Sarah as Kratos, and Heather as Sweeth-Tooth. PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royal will be available nationwide November 20, 2012.
