The Weekly Recap – Double Time (April 10th-23rd)

Recap

Man it has been a busy 2 and a half weeks for me. With that said, I was almost 3 weeks late with this recap, and I apologize for the wait. I know Oly wanted me to get it done so I can give him a ton of points from the recognitions. I think I should ban him for a while instead. Or dock a hundred points from him every time he posts something.

Anyway, it was a slow news period for both weeks in terms of news posted itself, although there was one really big news event last week that sent shockwaves through the blogosphere. The PSN outage and the compromisation of personal data and, possibly, credit cards. Yeah, it has garnered the attention of national news, and even the government, but at least Sony is using that downtime to make the PSN connection more secure (and hopefully more stable).

So, what about other news? We’ve had a collection of reviews a couple weeks ago, including games and hardware. EA released the extended version of the Fault Line series trailer (clocking in at around 12 minutes in length). Eddie compiled a list of all the free stuff PlayStation Plus users have gotten the 9 months it has been around so far.

Also, given the fear a lot of people have putting credit card info on PSN, Amazon now allows you to buy PSN cards online and get the codes instantly, so you don’t have to go to a retailer to pick them up. I can see that being a boost for Amazon now.

Community News & Game Nights

As far as the Community goes, before this week, there wasn’t much new in terms of features and the like (though, this week, we did get our points system upgraded!) With that said, I did make a walkthrough video to show you how to open your site chat into it’s own window. You can watch that video here.

We had a few giveaway updates over the past couple weeks. First of all, our Portal 2 winners have been selected! And for those who entered the Swarm giveaway, the top two in points should have gotten their download codes. Congratulations to the winners of both giveaways!

Since the PlayStation Network has been down for a while (namely since last week), we’ve only had one Game Night, for Killzone 3, on the 14th. Once PSN comes back up, we’ll start re-scheduling game nights!

Poll Results

What do you think of the Steam implementation in the PS3 version of Portal 2?
Revolutionary

  • PS3 Version Now a Must Buy

  • It’s Alright

  • Didn’t Need It

  • Not a Good Decision

  • Total Votes: 50
This is probably the first time I ever seen the poll results not switch positions from the time it was posted. It appears that most people find the idea of Steam integration, and all of its features, is revolutionary, and for good reason. Not too many games, if any, allow cross-platform play, let alone letting you have, essentially, 2 copies of a game for the price of one. Of course, thanks to the PSN downtime, many folks have been unable to link their PSN and Steam accounts to be able to play the title on both platforms. At least the PSN will be back up soon enough, eh?

    New Poll

Given the recent outage of PSN, this poll will focus on what people think of it in terms of how they are dealing with the security breach (as in, how they are dealing with the possible compromisation of personal data). I can’t really predict which will come out on top, since I have seen a lot of different opinions on it anyway.

    The Weekly Recap (April 3rd-9th)

    Recap

Old habits die hard, right? I didn’t mean for this one to be late, but I’ve been all over the place trying to get things taken care of and haven’t really had the time to work on this.

Anyway, enough with the excuses. Here are some highlights from last week: Battlefield 3 is going to have a huge ad campaign to have better market share with the title and to, maybe, take a lot of the thunder away from the Call of Duty series. Anonymous has been proving to everyone that what they’re doing is of great annoyance, NBA Elite is still having problems and will not have a 2012 title, and Jason informed us of some general maintenance with how to clean the PS3.

A number of trailers and videos have been released as well, including Twisted Metal (with a release date reveal), LA Noire, and InFamous 2. Even screens for Alice: Madness Returns and Battlefield 3 have made an appearance.

If you’re into reading reviews, we have a handful of those as well. EdEN had reviewed both MiniSquadrons and Swarm, and Madagasca has reviewed Yakuza 4. We also have a few more reviews coming soon, so keep an eye out for those as well!

    Community News & Game Nights

Not much new, but if you’re one of our co-writers, be sure to check out the co-writers group as I have been compiling a lot of resources for you guys to help make things easier for posting news. Hopefully you use these resources to your advantage!

Also, don’t forget, we still have double points going on for a few more days in certain areas, so capitalize on that!

Although the posts we had last week are, by now, pretty irrelevant on the account of me being so late with this recap, but we do have the FEAR 3 water bottle giveaway winners, as well as the winner to the PSP game Vertigo.

Also, we’re heading into the home stretch of the Portal 2 giveaway so if you haven’t entered yet, what are you waiting for? We have even increased video entries to count as 7!

And since I might be late with the next recap (hopefully not, though), there’s also a chance for you to win Swarm as well, as we’re giving away 2 copies of the hit PSN title!

We also have more giveaways planned in the near future, so keep your eyes peeled!

Game nights have been pretty consistent the past few weeks, usually landing on Thursdays. Tosh had posted a recap from the March 31st event, and then later set up another game night for April 7th. And don’t forget, there’s another Killzone 3 game night tonight, so be sure to take part!

If you could design a game, which genre would it be?
Results:

    • RPG – 29
    • Third Person Shooter RPG – 13
    • Third Person Shooter – 7
    • First Person Shooter – 5
    • Racing (Arcade or Sim) – 4
    • Platformer (2D or 3D) – 3
    • FPS/RPG1 – 3
    • Arcade – 2
    • MRPG – 1
Well, it appears that RPG had dominated this poll, followed by a TPS RPG, and then the shooters. I should have seen it coming, but the results are interesting nonetheless. I’m surprised multiplayer RPG got dead last, though.

    New Poll

There were no decent poll ideas, so I made this one based off of the recent Steam features detailed for Portal 2. Many places say that this implementation can be an XBox Live killer if the relationship between Valve and PS3 grows, as cross-platform play and the ability to download titles that you bought for PS3 onto your Steam account on PC/Mac are very attractive features. What is your opinion of it?

The Weekly Recap (March 27th-April 2nd)

    Recap

Got this one in relatively on time. Last week…what a week. First of all, my April Fools post. It ended up being very controversial, and I am sorry if that offended anyone, as that wasn’t the intention. The whole point was to trick people into thinking games were delayed, not poking fun at the earthquake itself, nor people who were actually laid off. Sorry if you took it the wrong way.

Now, with that out of the way, let’s look at some highlights. First of all, Jason expressed his concern over GameStop selling opened games as new. FooBear408 attended the FEAR 3 multiplayer event in San Fran during the week, and provided a live blog, as well as got us some free stuff to give you guys.

Word has it that the PS3 has outpaced the 360 as far as active units goes, which is quite a feat. DICE has gone out and basically said “bring it” to their rivals, referring to the upcoming title, Battlefield 3, which many believe to be the Call of Duty killer. Wal-Mart is getting some exclusive DLC for L.A. Noire (apparently, a few retailers will be getting exclusive content, which is no surprise). Virtua Tennis 4 is also slated to have some exclusive content only available on the PS3 in the form of mini-games, including one requiring the Move.

Last week was also a busy one for reviews. We have EdEN’s review of Slam Bolt Scrappers and Vertigo (which also includes a giveaway). Luke reviewed Back to the Future: Episode 1, and Jason gave us his take on Warriors: Legends of Troy. With that said, we still have more upcoming reviews, including my WWE All-Stars review, which will be up soon after I get my PS3 back from Gophermods.

    Community News & Game Nights

Not much of anything new, really. Apart from the previously mentioned controversy and the like, we do have double points going on from now until on or around the 18th, so it is definitely a good idea to take advantage of that while it’s around :) .

Currently, we still have the Portal 2 giveaway going on, of which, the end date has been moved to the 18th. Be sure to enter that if you haven’t done so already! This contest probably has more ways to enter than any other contest we’ve done in the past, so there are plenty of ways to do so, even if you’re low on points.

We also have a chance for you to win Vertigo for the PSP. If you’re interested, be sure to check out EdEN’s review, and click on the giveaway tab for details.

Also, if you like free swag, until tomorrow night, you can also win a free aluminum F.E.A.R. 3 bottle, courtesy of FooBear. Just leave a comment here and one will be chosen at random.

And finally, congratulations to the winner of the 500 points, Cazamalos!

I’m not entirely sure if another Game Night will take place this week, but Tosh hosted one for Killzone 3 last Thursday, though, I haven’t seen a recap post yet.

Also, my PS3 should be shipped back to me next week, so keep your eyes peeled for that Gran Turismo 5 tournament!

    Poll Results

What is your opinion on online trophies?

Good Idea: 16 Can Live Without: 11 Hate Them: 11
Great Idea: 5 Too Hard to Accomplish: 5

It seems that more people think that online trophies are a good idea (but not necessarily great), but the number of people who hate them or don’t care if they’re there or not isn’t far off either. And, of course, like those who think they’re a great idea, some folks have voted and said that they are too hard to accomplish, which I, myself, agree with since some of them are going to require teamwork and you would need good communication between players for that. Very mixed opinions on this one for sure.

    New Poll

This new poll was suggested by chealampalma, asking if you were able to design a game, which genre would you pick?

This, for me, would be a pretty hard one, as there are a lot of genres I enjoy. With all said and done, it might end up being a racing simulation game that takes all the best aspects from Gran Turismo, Forza, Need for Speed, DiRT, etc and puts it all into one supergame.

Remember, if you don’t see the genre listed, you have the ability to add an answer as well.

    The Weekly Recap (March 20th-26th)

    Recap

First of all, yes, I got this done in time for a change. I also dropped the “Poll Results” tab, as I already posted those yesterday/Friday on the last recap (which was almost a week late). I still have the new poll tab up, though, so you can vote on the poll for this week.

Anyway, it was a pretty uneventful week, and the number of posts shows it. QuickNews actually had more entries than the regular, front page articles (beating it out 18 to 15). That doesn’t mean we didn’t have anything interesting, though. For instance, our Portal 2 t-shirt and game giveaway went live (be sure to read the Community News tab).

While we’re still on the topic of contests, I would like to, personally, thank those who entered into the 6 year anniversary giveaway and said all those things about us. Hearing all the positive comments about the community makes it worth not getting paid to be part of the staff :) .

Now, for the week’s highlights. Jason has been keeping tabs on all the sales going on (at least in the states), so it’s nice to keep us informed of those. Also, apparently, GeoHot fled to South America. Here’s a “surprise.” Duke Nukem Forever has been delayed. At least it’s only for about a month or so, but that’s besides the fact.

Battlefield 3 is being looked at for possible Move and 3D implementation (as said by the developers). That, in no way, means that the game will, indeed, include said features, though. We got a few more videos and an impressions post from Luke’s visit to PAX as well. Here’s hoping the upcoming week is a little more eventful, though.

    Community News & Game Nights

This week was a pretty busy one, in terms of contests. Markus won the 6 year anniversary giveaway, so congratulations to him! And, again, thank you all for the support! Be sure to check that post out as well, as you can also win 500 points!

We also have the Portal 2 game and t-shirt giveaway. Remember, just because we have a few weeks before it ends, it’s better to get your entries out of the way now, because you might end up forgetting! It’s happened to people before!

Game Night activity has picked up a lot of steam recently, thanks to Jcmdaddy, as he had another Uncharted 2 game night going on. You can read a recap of that event here. If you would like, you can also see a highlight reel of the game they played last week as well.

Ace had also planned on doing a game night for the SOCOM 4 beta, but given how the download size was bigger than expected, Baba0Booey headed it instead. Beyond the comments, there has not been an official recap post of the event, though.

    The Weekly Recap (March 13th-19th)

    Recap

Yep, another late one. I’m still trying to find time to do things, but between dealing with back pain and stressing out over other things, the days seem to go by in a flash. I’ve been spending most of my time on here lately helping around the community and working with some of you on a few things to help better the site.

Anyway, Tosh has updated my title somewhat. As you know, I’ve been officially labeled as the Community Manager for a little while now. As of this week, I also have the position of Editor-in-Chief. Though, keep in mind, some articles will go through with an occasional error here and there, but I will fix errors if I come across them. If you find one, and I missed it, let me know and I will fix it :) .

Now, as for what went on from the 13th to the 19th, and what stories stuck out. We got a few more videos from Luke’s visit to PAX East this year, which all include gameplay. Despite not being able to record it, he also managed to check out Battlefield 3, which is sure to blow everyone’s mind. Darrin managed to go to SXSW, which happened during PAX, and didn’t let us know (so we didn’t have a live blog or anything), but he did write his own recap of the event.

Eddie, once again, got a bunch of NGP articles compiled to keep us up to date on what is going on with our future favorite handheld (subjective, of course). As for Kevin Butler, he showed off his S.H.A.F.T. method for MLB 11: The Show, so for a good laugh, check those out.

We also have reviews for MotorStorm Apocalypse and TNT racers by Trev and EdEN, respectively. Beyond that, Jason has been busy posting gaming deals and the like, which is a nice feature, but I will try to work with him to make them more pleasing to the eye, so bear with me! Be sure to read through the list of articles, both front page and QuickNews, as there is always more to read than what I talked about here.

Also, don’t forget, you can donate to the Red Cross to help with the Japanese tsunami relief through PSN (the denominations are fixed, but it’s a worthy cause, and you get a free theme).

    Community News & Game Nights

It’s been 6 years since we posted our first article. With that, we had a giveaway for a $20 PSN card (linked below). Not much in new features, but we did get a new chat system, which makes personal chats and private chat rooms possible. Definitely a nice upgrade.

For the past few weeks, and upcoming weeks for that mater, the number of giveaways we’ve had/are having has picked up quite a bit. First of all, as I said on the last recap, winners of the SOCOM 4 beta have been announced.

Since then, we’ve also had a Slam Bolt Scrappers giveaway, and even had that $20 PSN card giveaway for the blog’s 6 year anniversary. Luke has also acquired a number of t-shirts from PAX we will be using, including the Aperture Science t-shirts we’re giving away with Portal 2.

It’s always a good idea to come by and see what we have going on for contests! Usually, you can spot those announcements in the green box in the sidebar.

Game nights definitely seem to have been picking up in recent weeks. Jcmdaddy had scheduled an Uncharted 2 game night on the 17th, with a recap of the event the next day. Oly had also set up a game night for Hoard on the 18th (if you can even call it that as it wasn’t, exactly, a planned event).

    Poll Results

Updated the old poll with the current vote tallies, and, for the most part, it all stayed the same (in terms of placement, not vote number), save for “Awesome Already”, which now stands at 8 votes.

    New Poll

The poll for this week (and next week, due to how late this recap is) is based on Dynojunkee420′s idea on peoples’ opinion about online trophies (as in games that have trophies requiring you to play a game online). He will be rewarded his 100 points soon.
