Playstation.com evolves, includes friends list

November 19th, 2008, 1 Comment

r2_12.jpg

Sony are upgrading www.playstation.com so that it integrates more PSN features. They are also getting rid of the Playstation Underground service and integrating it into the PSN to create a more streamlined experience. The update will also allow us to check out our friend’s lists on the site. Other features are rating and reviewing games but I’m not sure if you can build a collection to show what you own. These all seem like good additions to me and I really like the design in the screenshot above. I look forward to when it launches next week.

PlayStation Network Users Matches Xbox LIVE

November 19th, 2008, 3 Comments

Sony announced that there are 14 millions users on the PlayStation Network, which matches the number announced for Xbox LIVE at the Tokyo Game Show recently. Granted, that includes multiple PSN accounts on a console. I myself have 4 total (accounts for North America, Europe, Japan, and Asia). But I only buy stuff off the North American store.

Because the PlayStation Network is free. People are more opt to try it out that way, and it’s a excellent selling point. It still needs some work, but it’s a great service for free.

Ad hoc Party Beta

November 6th, 2008, 3 Comments

Below is a video of how it works. It’s in Japanese, but you’ll get the basic idea. The interface itself is great! What it does is connect to other PSP’s in Ad hoc mode via the PS3’s PlayStation Network. You can also chat using your PS3 too.

Sad thing though is that you need your PS3 “wired” to the net. If your PS3 is wirelessly connected to the web then this service won’t work … nice logic there. But if you want to try it out it should be on the Japanese PlayStation Store today.

Full List OF PixelJunk Monster Trophy Challenges

October 27th, 2008, 1 Comment

I’m really hoping the PJM and PJM Encore patch is released this Thursday in Europe. It will probably be the only game that can distract me from Rapture until LBP is finally released. PS3Trophies.org has apparantley got the full list of all the Trophies that can be earned in PJM.

If you want to see what it will take to get the Trophies, including the secret Trophies, click the above link. I know some people may want to avoid seeing the full list.

Most of them will definitely make you play the game far differently to how you would normally play it. Some are going to be quite challenging too! :-D

I’m glad Q games have put some thought into their Trophy challenges, which is what I want more devs to start doing.

Have Trophies Been a Positive Addition so Far?

October 27th, 2008, 8 Comments

With the GTA IV Trophy patch now live I’ve been wondering if the addition of Trophies to some PS3 games has been a positive addition.

I know it’s early days but I would have to say yes, for the most part. I currently have 4 games that feature Trophies but so far, for the most part, Trophies have impacted positively on all four games.

Burnout Paradise

I got bored of Burnout Paradise pretty quickly when I first played it. Too many events were the same and I got a little tired of the gameplay. They added Custom soundtracks, bikes and a day night cycle which made me play it again for about a day, then I got bored again.

Then for some reason I got into a groove for collecting Trophies and I found a new passion for Burnout Paradise. I wasn’t bothered about having to start from scratch due to trophies not being retroactive but starting over again was actually enjoyable. I started doing the Burning Routes which I had never done on my first playthrough and I played a bit more online with a friend, helping each other collect Trophies.

For me, Trophies made Burnout fun again. Custom soundtracks and adding Bikes obviously added to the enjoyment but it was the pursuit of trophies that made me give burnout a 2nd chance. That may be a bit shallow but it made me appreciate the game more.

SuperStardust: HD

I already loved SS: HD, so Trophies were never going to make me find a new passion for playing it, they did however give me the incentive to play the new different modes like Bomber and Endless more than I would have.

In turn, I got more enjoyment out of Arcade mode in general going through all the planets in one sitting and achieving a new high score as a result.

Trophies didn’t have as big of an impact on SS: HD as they did on Burnout Paradise but their inclusion gave me extra motivation to improve my skills. Late Boomer still eludes me though. I came so close last night too! :x

WipeOut HD

It’s hard to comment on WipEout HD because I’ve hardly played it and racing games as a rule, are my least favourite genre so it’s probably at a disadvantage already compared to the other games, but what I will say is that the Trophies in WipEout actually offer a real challenge compared to the majority of Trophies that can be earned in most other games.

Some Trophies are going to take hours upon hours of practice, perfecting your skills in order to beat a certain lap time or achieve all golds in Elite mode. Whether this is a good thing depends on whether you’re willing to put in the time to do that or whether WipEout is actually enjoyable enough to make you want to do that.

It is good that some devs are putting some thought into how you can achieve Trophies. Some games have taken a far too easy route but I’ll comment on this shortly.

For me, at this moment in time, I can’t be bothered to put in the time with WipEout HD. There are too many great games out now and over the next two months but because it’s a PSN game, I can come back to it in a few months time and put in the time needed. Having Trophies there to be completed will give me a reason to play it again down the line.

BioShock

I’m loving BioShock so far. It’s a game that would be played again and again just because it is that good. The Trophies in it though are a mixed bag. Some are really easy like completing the opening level. :?

Others are supposed to offer a greater test of your gaming prowess such as completing the game on Survivor difficulty without using a Vita chamber, although if it still lets you save at anytime on Survivor mode then that sort of defeats the purpose.

As a whole the Trophies in BioShock are a mixed offering. Some are just giveaways for completing standard tasks within the game while others will make you explore Rapture more or play the game with set goals in mind.

We need far more of the latter and less of the former. Burnout Paradise gives you far too many Trophies for doing the most simplest things like driving through a garage or crashing through the yellow gates. They don’t give you a sense of achievement when they are handed to you on a plate.

Of course you have Bronze, Silver and Gold Trophies to collect, with the difficulty rising as you move towards the Silver and Gold Trophies but far too many Bronze and Silver Trophies are just handed to you without having done anything special to earn them.

Trophies should offer you a sense of achievement, so that when you get them, you’ve either played a game in a different way to what you normally would or you’ve achieved something significant and improved your skills as a result and been rewarded with a Trophy for the effort you’ve put in.

I use the word achievement quite a bit. I always get far greater pleasure from most things if I know I’ve earned something rather than being given something as a token gesture, just for the sake of it.

This is the problem I’ve found with Trophies so far. I know it is early days and that devs are probably trying to strike the right balance between how difficult some Trophies should be to get and they probably don’t want to make Trophies appear as a burden. However, I would be happier if they offered less trophies if it meant the ones available would give you a greater sense of achievement once you earned them.

It’s worth remembering that Trophies are optional and if someone isn’t willing to put the time in, like I’m not with WipEout HD but I am willing to with BioShock, then that’s the player’s choice. Devs shouldn’t have to put in a Trophy just to make up the numbers or just for the sake of it. Trophies should challenge the player to play games differently and to test their game playing ability in ways they would not normally do. If the game is good enough then I’m sure most people would put the effort in.

Overall, I like Trophies, they’ve made me appreciate certain games more and I’ve put more time in games that I would probably not bother with again and made me play them in a different way to what I normally would. I just hope devs start to show more imagination with the Trophies they implement rather than simply giving them away in future.

I’m interested to hear whether you guys agree or disagree with any of the points I’ve raised.

PSN Games Released Globally Soon?

October 24th, 2008, 2 Comments

Sony is working on a process of approving PSN games for America, Europe and Japan at once. This would great. No more delayed PSN games if this works out. Hopefully this also means more PSN games coming down the line since it will be easier for developers to get there game out to the masses.

PixelJunk Monsters & Encore Patch Coming Soon

October 23rd, 2008, 4 Comments

There’s a new patch that is going to be released for both PixelJunk Monster and PixelJunk Monsters: Encore. It’s due to be released firstly in Japan on Oct 23rd (today). Then North American and European territories should get it on Thu Oct 30th, if the final testing gets the all clear.

Here is what is in the patch

Game Difficulty settings:
You can now choose between three different difficulties of gameplay! There is a Casual mode, the Regular/Ranked mode, and Hard-core mode. The great news here is that you can use any combination of difficulties to complete your progress through the islands! Is there one particular map that’s too hard? Try it in Casual mode. If you Rainbow the level, that rainbow counts and will remain on the map no matter what difficulty the other rainbows were achieved at! Only the Regular difficulty will register on the ranking boards, though.

Tower Menu selection:
You can now set the default menu to appear when selecting a tower! How many times have you sold off a tower and run over to another tower to quickly upgrade it and accidentally sell it by mistake? I know I’ve done that many, many times. Now you can choose which option appears as the default, instead of the last action you selected.

Tower Balancing:
Those of you who have purchased Encore know about the reduced cost on the Ice Tower, and balanced functionality of the Tesla tower. This patch applies those changes to BOTH islands, not just the Encore island.

Video Recording / YouTube Support:
Ever since Q-Games included this feature into PixelJunk Eden, we knew it needed to be in Monsters as well. You will be able to record up to 10 minutes of gameplay and upload it directly to your YouTube account, or send it to your video folder on your PS3’s XMB.

XMB Custom Soundtrack Support:
You can now make your own custom soundtrack to listen to as you play PixelJunk Monsters and Encore! I’ve personally been enjoying listening to the PixelJunk Eden soundtrack while I play Monsters, as well as listening to the PixelJunk Monsters soundtrack within Eden! It’s great how well those fantastic soundtracks work in other games.

TROPHIES:
Trophies are now added for both PixelJunk Monsters and Encore. We weren’t able to retroactively apply Trophies to the previously played data, but Q-Games didn’t want to force people to play everything all over again. They came up with a great idea by creating Trophy Challenges. These challenges have specific maps with set rules or objectives that will reward you with Trophies if you complete them properly.

Awesome news for fans of the excellent and massively addictive PixelJunk Monsters and Encore!!

Custom soundtracks is a great addition. I think it adds a lot to the games that currently support it so I’m pleased they are finally being supported.

I’m also really happy about the route they’ve taken to add in Trophy support. Having achieved all the Rainbows in single player mode in Encore and just needing 2 to get in PJM, I really did not want to have to replay all the missions again.

Trophy Challenges is a great way to include Trophies into PJM. Hopefully it will motivate more people to invest more time playing this absolute gem of a game. It may even tempt some people into buying it if they haven’t already.

I really can’t speak highly enough of PJM and Encore. It’s one of the most addictive games I’ve ever played and is definitely one of the best games currently available on the PS3. I rate it higher than most Blu-ray titles out there.

If you haven’t already bought PJM or Encore and you think Tower Defence games aren’t for you, I’d seriously consider getting PJM. It’s so addictive and fun and the new patch has added even more to an already excellent title.

Two player co-op is also a lot fun from what people have told me, so if you want a game to play with family/friends/partners, PJM should be right at the top of your list.

PlayStation Store Update 9.11.08

September 11th, 2008, Add a Comment

Lots of content this week. I’m curious to see how MotorStorm: Pacific Rift is, not sure if I’ll get it yet or not. I’ll have to check out the PAIN update too, looks fun. I wish the characters where cheaper though, $0.99 is a bit much for one character. Maybe if it was a bundle of 3 - 5 characters I’d bite.
