Nintendo DS 383,700 151,353 535,053 -36.92%

Congrats to PS3, for largest year over year gains!

Two negatives from a sales data perspective:

NPD has delayed their public release of US sales data, which is understandable. They are serving paying customers, not us non-paying consumers. However, I imagine that they get a lot of publicity from this.

garaph.info has stopped updating their Japan software sales.

Commentary

  • Pokemon, Final Fantasy, and Battlefield BC2 all outsold God of War 3 when combining SKUs.
  • PSP sales have really dropped in the US, but are extremely strong, and even outselling the DS in Japan.
  • In the US, and only in the US, 360 consoles continue to outsell PS3, despite PS3 having a better price/value ratio and a higher quality game library that sells higher volumes to a smaller user base. Interpretation: In the US, the Xbox 360 is selling on brand name, and not hardware quality, software library, or price/value ratio.
  • By most metrics, PS3 has cumulatively surpassed the 360 in Japan and regions other than Japan and US. Only in the US does the 360 maintain a cumulative sales lead.

(We don’t yet have complete Japan software sales for March. The data is available, but would require too much effort to compile. garaph.info is about a month out of date)

Heavy Rain Tops 1 Million in Sales

Quantic Dream had been interviewed by a German publication, and in that interview, David Cage mentioned that the ‘experimental’ PlayStation 3 game has topped one million in sales. He stated “That was a surprise for many – some expected more like 200,000 to 300,000 sold units.“. Given how the game isn’t even close to the mainstream, this is one great achievement! They expect to sell 1.5 million by the end of the year.

FFXIII conquers UK Charts, PS3 version outsells 360 release

http://www.digitaltrends.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/final_fantasy_xiii.jpg
Final Fantasy XIII has muscled its way to the top of the UK All Format Charts this past week, with the PlayStation 3 version of the critically acclaimed RPG outselling its 360 counterpart.
Sony’s black box accounted for 54 percent of overall sales for the Square Enix title, while the 360 nabbed 46 percent. One things for sure, punters can’t get enough of the venerable Japanese franchise, and we imagine Square must be patting themselves on the back right now.

Final Fantasy XIII released last Tuesday and has shipped five million copies worldwide.

Top ten this past week:

1 – Final Fantasy XIII (Square Enix, Square Enix)
2 – Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (EA DICE, EA)
3 – Just Dance (Ubisoft, Ubisoft)
4 – Heavy Rain (Quantic Dream, SCE)
5 – Wii Fit Plus (Nintendo, Nintendo)
6 – Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Infinity Ward, Activision-Blizzard)
7 – Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing (Sumo Digital, Sega)
8 – Aliens vs Predator (Rebellion, Sega)
9 – Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo, Nintendo)
10 – New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Nintendo, Nintendo)
