This is the first of hopefully many reviews. It’s not my intent to use a scoring system as one persons 5 is another’s 2.5 so I just point out what I see or don’t and then you can judge for yourself.
For this review I have picked Afrika released in Asia as Hakuna Matata. It was released by Rhino Studios in Japan in Q3-08 and the US in Q4-09 but had lack luster sales likely due to US gamers not understanding what the game was. And also having to compete for gamer dollars against titles such as Uncharted 2, Assassins Creed 2, and COD:MW2.
Afrika is a game that puts player in the role of a new photographer for National Geographic on a photo safari of Africa’s vast Serengeti. The game features over 75 different animals, Including all ones you think of when you hear “Africa” and some you never knew existed.
Right now there is only one free dynamic theme, and it’s on the Japanese PlayStation Store (thanks for the heads up Gibb!) It’s pretty cool actually, go here to see it in motion. Hopefully more free ones pop up.
Eurogamer has reviewed the Japanese (and currently only) version of Afrika:
It’s not perfect. The visuals are a little disappointing; they’re pretty rather than stunning. While the animals look realistic they don’t exhibit much individual behaviour, and their actions can be predictable. And, oh all right, hiding behind bushes can get a bit boring.
Still. Afrika is one of the most pleasant, enjoyable and gently engrossing games I’ve played in a while. It’s a shame Sony isn’t releasing it here, and it’s worth importing. Especially if you’re the type of person who can imagine experiencing a special kind of thrill from snapping a monkey up a tree instead of shooting a zombie in the face. Though it’s not as much fun as running over a lion, obviously.
Bah! I wish Sony would remove their head from their arses and release Afrika in the West!! It’s exactly the type of game that Sony needs to add to the PS3’s library.
More variety is always good, especially with a unique title like Afrika. Even if it is a niche title, these types of games should be given a chance to sell.
I bet if you had guns and a First Person view it would be released in the West…
I really hope this gets a release in the West! This is exactly the type of game Sony needs to boost the variety of the PS3 library.
I like the idea of being able to save pics to your HDD and hopefully being able to set them as wallpapers and uploading them to an online gallery.
