Competitive Shooter Rundown (MW2, BF:BC2, KZ2, MAG)
Posted by Darrin in Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Killzone 2, MAG - Massive Action Game on February 8th, 2010
Modern Warfare 2
- Best polish, attention to detail, and perfection of many finer points.
- Deepest character progression system and load out configuration. This really rewards long term play.
- Lots of gameplay variety in terms of different game modes and options.
- Kill Cam: It’s a small feature, but it’s really helpful to see exactly how you got killed.
- Spawn Trapping: Lots of matches devolve into one side blocking the other side from leaving their spawn points. The helicopter/attack planes can really make these spawn traps impossible to break out of.
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (based on demo)
- Best vehicles. Most vehicle variety, well integrated into play, and very fun.
- Highly polished and detailed core mechanics. Excellent tech, play balance, and strategy.
- Environment destruction.
- Have only played the demo (obviously). Does this game hold player interest with extended play?
- Battlefield 2 (on PC) had similar pros, but the game was unusually buggy, and I found the DLC fragmented the community and was too frequent and overpriced. Will this have similar problems?
Killzone 2
- Rotating missions/objectives within a single match delivers a lot of variety.
- Most stylized visuals. Coolest particle effects, wild environments, and helghast soldiers look the best.
- Most unique character progression + load out options
- One you reach general rank, you feel like you have pretty much seen everything.
MAG
- Best human chain of command squad/platoon system.
- Unique sense of being part of a larger coordinated conflict. There are other games that support large player counts and squad management systems, but this game does it the best.
- Control points, secondary abilities, and support actions are well done and add a lot of strategic replayability.
- The visuals are very good by most standards and are more than adequate for this type of gameplay, but they are way behind the competition.
- Lack of variety. There is really one main game mode (domination) that you will spend almost all of your time playing.
- Least amount of overall polish + detail.
- Unbalanced factions.
Others
I left out plenty from this list. Rainbow Six, Metal Gear Online, SOCOM, Resistance 2, Uncharted 2, and many others all have respectable competitive modes that I just haven’t put enough time into to really comment on.
Overall
If there is one genre of game that the current crop of game developers have really nailed with exceptional quality, variety, and polish, it is the competitive shooter. The range of choices and the level of quality is amazing.

Killzone 2 Soundtrack now on iTunes
Posted by Tosh in Killzone 2 on November 9th, 2009

The official soundtrack for Killzone 2 has finally arrived on iTunes. Only 8 months after the release of the game, lol. Better late than never I suppose. Music was done by the Nimrod Session Orchestra and recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London. Included in the album is a remix of the Fight the A.T.A.C.
Each track is $0.99 or $9.99 for the full album. Here is the full track list:
Killzone 2 is Full of Schmucks

Yesterday I tried unsuccessfully to set up a games night in Killzone 2. But I decided to go online anyway and see what fun there was to be had.
First, I searched for games with the new maps, because I’ve bought them and want to play them. For one of the two maps, there were NO GAMES. Not even full games. Can it be that nobody at all was playing this map yesterday at prime time? (Around 9:30pm EST.) For the other map, there was exactly one game. It is very frustrating to buy a map pack and then not be able to play the maps!
I tried a total of three games last night. All three had these two things in common:
The teams were unbalanced. In one game, I joined a team with two players and the other team had nine! How is this fair? How is this even fun? Needless to say, I exited the game before getting very far. The other two games were almost as bad. I play games to have fun, not to be annoyed.
The games were full of spawn campers. All three. And it was pretty bad. In one game I was placed on the side with many more players (why?). And I wandered around the level, and there was nobody to fight! Eventually I found the enemy – being spawn camped by a bunch of people on my team. Where’s the fun in that? So I exited the game.
Are all game players out there always this unsportsmanlike? Sniveling little cowards who don’t know the meaning of fair play? Is this what Killzone 2 has devolved to? This is not fun. Not even a bit. After last night’s experience I really wish for the days where The Mockers were active. Now those were fun games.
Game Night Tonight

So it’s been a while since we got together for a games night. Killzone 2 now has 3 map packs consisting of 6 extra maps. I propose that we get together tonight for some Killzone 2 action!
If you’re not already in The Mockers, you can join our game anyway. (You just need to have a friend in the Mockers to find the game.) Or you can join The Mockers by following this link.
I’ll be setting up a game tonight at 10pm EST. Come join the fun! Please respond to let me know if you’re coming.

So, some of you know that PS3Blog has its own clan for Killzone 2. And I heard that activity died real fast. I decided last night to download the Killzone 2 map bundle(11.99) and get a game going. I was thinking Wednesday at 9 o’clock eastern time. This is where you tell me if I should add the new maps or not, because i’m not sure if you all have it or not. (You have no idea how hard it was not to say y’all.) Or give me a better day for you and we’ll work it out. By the way, my psn is Thepreppymonk.
More Killzone 2 Napalm and Cordite DLC Details
Posted by JimmyMagnum in Killzone 2 on July 17th, 2009
As I’ve mentioned in a previous post, there’s going to be another DLC pack coming our way, entitled Napalm and Cordite. It includes the two new maps Suljeva Cliffside and Arctower Landing. Today, we have a few more morsels, including the above trailer.
Previously mentioned on the official blog was that the new DLC will bring two weapons into the multiplayer scene, carried over from single player. These are the VC1 flamethrower and Boltgun 4400 (my personal favorite). Here are a few details, according to the posting up on the official blog:
Both of these weapons radically alter the Killzone 2 multiplayer dynamic, delivering an experience that’s as fresh as it is intense. If you’re a veteran Killzone 2 online player looking to mix it up, or if you simply liked wielding these weapons in the single player campaign, Napalm & Cordite is your ticket. Look for it on the PlayStation Store July 23rd!
Now I just gotta find the money to get it! Also, IGN has an interview with Guerrilla Games about the upcoming map pack.
Upcoming Killzone 2 Patch and DLC Details
Posted by JimmyMagnum in Killzone 2 on July 10th, 2009

Guerrilla Games just posted an update on the official blog pertaining to the upcoming “Patch 1.28″, which is set to be released Tuesday, July 14th at 8AM GMT worldwide (for those of us in the states, that 12AM Pacific). When the patch is released, the servers will be down for testing and whatnot to make sure everything is stable, so keep that in mind. Here’s a few of the patch changes/additions/fixes:
- Feature – Detailed information screen when browsing games. Items displayed include: Friendly Fire, Faction Balancing, Custom Weapons and Custom Badges as well as the region, game size, selected maps and allowed Missions and Badges.
- Feature – Higher values for Bodycount mode. Players can now create games with 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 50, 100 and 200 points to increase the time of the mode for 32 player games.
- Feature – Moderators can now create double-points events.
New loading screens. - Fix for network error displayed when trying to log in with another users account.
- Exploit – Radec Academy collision fix to prevent players being revived inside a pillar and using it to their advantage.
As far as the DLC goes, not too much has been released on that except for a few tidbits from the update and the maps’ names. It’s called “Napalm & Cordite”, which includes the two new maps“Suljeva Cliffside” and “Arctower Landing”. Additional details about the new DLC pack will be made public next week.
New Killzone 2 Maps Available Today
Posted by Tosh in Killzone 2, PS3 on June 11th, 2009
Great video, lol. Effects look pretty good. The new maps include Southern Hills and Beachhead, which is from Killzone 1 but reworked with the Killzone 2 engine. And it seems like you’ll have to keep on eye on exploding nukes and find cover before the blast kills you. I like that idea
Here are some survival tips taken from the PlayStation.Blog
Helghast Field Manual 15: Surviving the Southern Hills
1. When you hear the siren, drop whatever you are doing. Just run like heck. A live soldier is a lot more useful to the Helghan Empire than a scorched, smoking one. You’ll only have a couple of seconds to get to cover, so don’t waste any time.
2. Science be damned! Just Duck & Cover! If you see the nuke going off the in the distance, simply ensure that you have a roof above your head. You don’t even have to close the windows or anything. Anyone caught outside will be turned into a something resembling jerky.
3. If you spawn in your base and hear the sirens going off, just stay where you are and the let the folks outside deal with the problems. You’ll be much quicker off the mark once the dust settles.
4. Sentry Bots and Sentry Turrets are not immune to the devastating power of the nuke. Don’t leave them sitting outside, or they will turn into burning chunks like anything else. Place Sentry turrets inside to ensure their safety and they will cut off the enemies path to shelter.
5. If you are inside, watch the doorways for enemies ducking inside to safety. Or even better, mow them down with an emplaced machine gun before they get anywhere near. That’ll teach ‘em to run like dogs!
6. Out in the open? Any base can be a safe spot from the impending nuclear annihilation. If you find yourself far from home, just go duck into the enemies’ base. Your chances of survival will be higher than out in the open.
7. The Bots in Killzone 2 do have a sense of self-preservation and when that siren sounds, they will try to save themselves as much as any living player. Follow them for the closest safe-spot, but make sure no sneaky ISA scum are hiding in there in the first place.
8. Repaired ammo boxes and Emplaced MG’s will not be destroyed by the blast, so you won’t have to repair them again.
9. Assassination targets! If the siren goes off, get to cover. I repeat, run like hell. Nothing worse than successfully defending the target and having it turned into smithereens before your very eyes and not being able to do anything about it.
10. If all else fails, climb up the ladder to the roof of the central base to get a good view of the explosion in the east. It might cause you a fiery death, but damn it the explosion is too sexy not to look at in all of its splendor.
So will you be picking this map pack for Killzone 2? I know I will.

It’s out on June 11th for $5.99
Second downloadable Killzone®2 Map Pack announced
Fight your way down memory lane with the Flash and Thunder Pack: two original Killzone® maps remade for PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™)
London, 20th May 2009: The next wave of downloadable content for Killzone®2 on PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) has now been announced. Prepare for a literal blast-from-the-past in the form of the Flash and Thunder Pack: a download from PlayStation®Store featuring the Beach Head and Southern Hills maps. They’re two of the best maps from the original Killzone® for PlayStation®2 – now completely remade for PS3, overflowing with brutal combat between the ISA and the merciless Helghast and offering gamers even more ways to play the first-person shooter that everyone’s talking about.
The Beach Head map sees the ISA tasked with defending a coastal stronghold against a Helghast landing force. This rain-lashed and windswept battlefield is limited in size – which means more action, more hand-to-hand combat, plenty of sneaking up on the enemy and melee kills galore. The Southern Hills map sees the ISA attempting to storm a Helghast compound on top of a hill. A mixture of built-up terrain and wide open spaces – perfect for headshot sniper kills – this map is full of hiding places and offers the perfect battlefield for a large-scale game with lots of players.
The Flash and Thunder Pack is the second awesome instalment of downloadable extra content for Killzone 2 on PS3 and will arrive in PlayStation®Store on (11th of June 2009).
