Sony Computer Entertainment America President and CEO, Jack Tretton, visited the University of Southern California campus last month and spoke to students about the past, present, and future of the PlayStation. I had a chance to attend this event, and it was amazing to see Mr. Tretton in a casual setting. Normally the only time we would see him is during the Sony press briefing at E3, where he speaks in front of thousands. However, this time, it was a more “me and you” type of meeting. Mr. Tretton was introduced by Richard Lemarchand, now associate dean at USC and former lead designer of Naughty Dog.
Being in the presence of SCEA’s big boss is such a crazy, unique feeling. I mean, this guy is the shot caller for everything PlayStation. He talked about how PlayStation continues to grow and extend its generations through various versions of its platform over the years, such as the first PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3. He never once hinted anything about possible next generation consoles. He goes on to discuss the PlayStation Vita and how the target demographics prefer something more “adult” and that “tablets and smartphones are just an addition, but ultimately, we want to bring true handheld console gaming to our consumers”
Capcom celebrated the release of Resident Evil 6 in style with a star studded performance headlined by New York rapper, NAS. The event was held at Lure nightclub in Hollywood, California on September 28, 2012. The general atmosphere of the venue itself was just like any other Hollywood club. Full of wannabes and trying to be’s. Yeah, sure, it was attended by the likes of Kendra and Hank Baskett, and Shawn Roberts, however, personally, I find these events to be so ridiculous.
Official social media game industry websites advertise these events “for the gaming community” but you never get that feeling. I had to argue with the people in the media line to let me in and they kept saying it was max capacity inside. 5 minutes after arguing with them, they let me in, mind you the venue holds 1600 people; it looked more like 200 people were in there. This may come off as negative, however I just want to give credit where credit is due. The hard working producers and the fans. Without the fans, Resident Evil wouldn’t have been as big, Without the producers, the game would not exist!

As a gamer, do you care about the production and the people behind the title? Or do you just play it and toss it?

During my time at PAX PRIME a week ago. I managed to ask Omar Kendall, lead designer of Superbot Entertainment, a couple of questions regarding their upcoming game Sony Smash-Bro, whoops.. I meant PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royal. I was wandering around Sony’s booth and there he was, just standing next to the game stations.
