Its not that bad. Sony will fix it ,,I have heard bad things about anybody but them fixing a launch console.  The same thing happened to my launch 60,,when you send it to Sony (highly recommend) tape a note to the top of the machine with the game title and that it (the game)is inside thay will send it back with the console. I did for my launch 60 and it works now! My copy of the game was returned as well.

You could send it to http://gophermods.com/, they repair ylod for $70, and they give your same console and any games in it back in under a week.

Just got hit with the YLOD hmm cry In the past couple weeks sometimes it would turn off and flash red. Tonight it happened a couple times so I took out the disc and good thing I did. Because I then tried to back up my hard drive and got the dreaded YLOD! So I'm thinking either go with gophermods or … I don't know maybe get a slim ….. I haven't backed up my saved in a long time :( Wish you could just pop your hard drive in another PS3 and go …

I got a 60 GB PS3 at launch, I had disc read issues with that but it happened in under a year, so Sony covered that and gave me a refurbished PS3 which is what I have now. Ran for 3+ years. I don't play PS2 games, but I love that the option is there when I need it. I really need all 4 usb slots. The memory card readers are very handy too…

Sorry to hear you got the dreaded YLOD tosh…………sadly I do not feel for you. I have a launch "fatty" PS3 that still runs as good as the day i took it out of the box. My wife now uses it to play Rock band 3, lego games and various other games as well as netflix in our bedroom while I use the slim in the living room.

Not to say you didnt take excellent care of it (you seem like a guy who would take immaculate care of his toys like i do) but it happenes. I reccomend gophermods.com to have it repaired, they have a reball service with lead solder. It has been reported that the newer lead free solder and subpar thermal paste lead to the YLOD. I have heard nothing but rave reviews about them, and theyre cheap as well.

Good luck brother, i feel sorry for you.

I took very good care of my PS3 as I do with all my electronics. I made sure it was free of dust always and do a vacuum to the in/out port gently to remove excess dust. But hey stuff happens…

Going to send it to GopherMods to repair it, sell it and maybe move up to a Slim. Haven't fully decided yet other than getting mine repaired. If I do go slim, then I'd probably get this accessory so I can double my USB Ports. I'll let you know how it goes..

You should stick with your launch unit since having the PS2 BC is always a great option since you only need to hook up one console to the TV instead of the two.

Just got it back today, haven't tried it yet. Still at work, but it was a 10 day turn around with ground shipping both ways during the holidays. So excellent turnaround time!

The paper that came with it said that the thermal paste used has a curing time of 200 hours. So you can't play for more than 2 hours at a time. After 2 hours it says you must turn the PS3 off and let it cool for 15-25 mins. Then you can resume playing for another 2 hours. After about 2 months you can play it as long as you'd like.
