Does anyone know whether there is an upper limit to the size of a HDD in a PS3 fat? I'm not going to put anything crazy big in it, but I was thinking maybe half a terabyte. I read one site that claimed that the max size is 320 Gb — surely false, yes? I also read that the HDD must spin at at least 5400 RPM (I'm looking at 7200 RPM) and that the filesystem should be FAT32. Anything else I should know before I embark on this endavour? I appreciate your advice!
Just a warning… don't lose the screws or cross thread them… they are tough to get and you need them…
I remember reading people putting 640GB Hard Drives in there PS3's. As far as the filesystem, the PS3 will format it when you put it in for the first time.
Adam T is right about the screws, use a bigger screwdriver than you'll think you need.
if it fits in the bay, it will/should work. The blue screw is the biggest pain in the ass, though. the head of mine is stripped lol, so I only have it pretty much finger tightened if I ever need to remove it again. I have a 500GB HDD installed
Wow, it stripped after just one time replacing the HDD? I'll make certain to be careful. Thanks, cats!

yeah had to use needle nose pliers to grab the outside edge and twist it lol
Same thing happened to me, lol. I think I have a new screw in there now.
Gonna add on another warning to be careful regarding the screws and such. There is actually a design flaw in the PS3 models regarding this so if you find them too hard to get out phone up sony and request a new HDD Shell to put your new on inside. It'll take a while to arrive but it's better then damaging anything.
