So they are probably selling for profit, but they need to sell more to re-coup the development costs.

They probably cost around 10 to 15 pound to make, retail price probably £25, they sell for £35. 

 

but I'm just guessing,Sony rarely make a huge margin on their hardware and usually rely on software to make profits

It seems that Microsoft has followed in the money grubbing footsteps of Activision and is charging three times as much as the cost for the Kinect, but frankly I'm not surprised.
