WOT is your basic fantasy epic not unlike LotRs which is actually a pretty terrible comparison plotwise because one of my major complaints with LotR is that most of the story is inferred. You never see the rings in power. You just see the One Ring as being destroyed...

WOT is more like fantasy Star Wars. It's about some people from a sleepy village (not unlike the shire). Originally three boys. One of whom is destined to destroy the great Evil. He nearly destroyed the world once thousands of years ago and is destined to have been reborn so that he can do it again basically while defeating the great Evil.

It's a very complex plot that only skims the surface of what's going on but I find it compelling for a few reasons, the magic system is interesting (men magic nearly destroyed the world once, and now it's persecuted to the point of near extinction), women magicians are basically the UN of the world going around keeping peace but since this is like Feudal Europe (Swords and Bows) they do it thru fear and intimidation.

Edit: So at the start of the book there are a few forces at play, one of the three boys is the Dragon Reborn destined to fight the Evil one. They're basically on their way to lady wizard HQ to figure out what to do next. But there are other forces like the Dark One attacking the band (3 boys, + 1 lady wizard + her bodyguard, + 1 girl who has magic in her and +1 their local herb lady who is over protective), there is also political factions in play (not nearly as involved at Game of Thrones which for me is a BIG plus), there are a set of people who hate all magic (think spanish inquisition) there are forces thought long banished that return (that could actually apply to three different factions). And thru those first three books one of them will realize he is the Dragon in truth unlike the falsies that have been oddly popping up lately, the others will begin to develop into forces in their own right.

Honestly the best intro to see if you'd like it would have been the promo book but that's hard to get nowadays. I think they split the first book (Eye of the World) into two books and that one (From Two Rivers) should be pretty short and decent priming into what the books are like. There is a short story prequel that evolved into it's own book ("New Spring") but I don't think it's a good spot to start. That'd be like starting with Sex in the City:Early Years.

In terms of the book unlike say Sword of Truth there aren't a lot of different races. There are humans good and pretty much anything else is an agent of "The Dark One" who like in Harry Potter should not be named and unlike Sword of Truth it matters if you say the name.

I used to have it. I had it for years before I was on a math trip one day and started to read it. Around the time book 4 was releasing if I recall.
