The problem with an "only digital" future? Download limits in Canada, shitty Internet in the US.

I agree as someone in Canada who has a download limit of 120GB I almost reach it every month. Those will have to be expanded. Is the internet really shitty in the states. We tend to have great quality internet in Canada thought it would be similar.

I've never had poor internet in the states and I've lived in a lot of places but I'm given to understand that the issue is (not unlike Canada) the US has a VERY LARGE area to cover. It's not like France you could cover France with the infrastructure they use in new england.. but US is much bigger and so there are a lot of rural areas that engage in commerce but basically have been ignored by tech companies due to the lack of population density. It's the definition of what can go wrong with unchecked capitalism. As a company with limited funds it makes more sense for you and your shareholders to focus on the population dense areas the lower 10% in terms of population density can easily get lost in the shuffle because they're not a priority.

pretty sure the company that goes all digital will be in trouble, if MS does that, then well, they will say goodbye.

Fascinating discussion all, and thanks for the clarification, wolfkin. I'm conflicted about digital in that on the one hand, I like having something "in hand" when I make a purchase, but then again, discs can be damaged, lost, or stolen. I've had the soft top on my Jeep Wrangler slashed three times and my CD collection stolen (three times!!), so I know something about the pain of losing discs. :) Let me tell you, I was happy to make progressive changes to mp3 cds, then an mp3 player, and finally bluetooth streaming. But apples and oranges, I know -- a car isn't a house, and CDs aren't games.

As for internet, dunno how I would live without a high-speed connection that has no data ceiling.

it changes you man.. like I've always wanted to cut the cord.. i left the US just when Hulu was getting started. i started watching Lost around Season 4 because they had literally every episode online streaming and i figured.. well hey if they're making it that easy for me I might as well watch it.

But when you consider that streaming (esp HD streams) aren't much smaller than downloading then the fact that I can't download my full TV lineup without blowing my cap is something to consider.. the other is that they count uploads as well as downloads in the cap which is really unfair.

i always read articles about how most people will never hit their caps.. I think a lot of that has to do with people not trying. If I can watch my TV online instead of over the cable I'll do that. usually shorter commercials if I ever let them thru, freedom to watch when I want without buying huge expensive DVRs or using the terrible always so terrible and slow On Demand. Heck even now I'd buy a Roku box if I could be sure it would have TV streams. And once you start doing that you're use climbs. I have to wonder how many people up here use Netflix like Americans use it. I know most of my American friends won't watch a show unless it's on Netflix streaming. It's hilariously awkward and lazy but it makes me laugh. Their usage must be massive.
