If you are using an HDMI out, just sync a SIXAXIS controller via bluetooth to the Vita and play away. I'm guessing most games will have alternative methods to control schemes.

As far as the UMD drive goes….I'm pretty sure it would be a UMD ripper, not a UMD player.

Ah, I see what you mean. Makes sense then. A charger/HDMI out dock.

A UMD ripper, on the other hand, would likely result in the need for a lot of licensing agreements needing to be renegotiated since you're essentially making a physical copy into digital, and not all licensing agreements would allow for that. Although, maybe, what could work is having the PSP library available digitally on the PSN (which would still require the aforementioned licensing renegotiations, and why we don't see it happening as much as it should) and a UMD reader that maybe cross checks data on a UMD with a data library and registers a digital version of the game for you to download off of the PSN. Although it is safer for the end user since you won't have to worry about corruptive data from a potentially damaged disc being transferred over, there's a much better chance of exploitation by hackers to essentially trick the system into thinking it's reading a specific game, but it would be relatively hard to pull that off unless you can fool it digitally. In either case, it still comes down to the licensing agreements.

Vita not using UMDs means I'll wait extra long before buing one as it not being BC with the last portable is something that is just plain wrong and could back fire for Sony as it did when they removed BC for PS2 games to save $10.

Your other option is to have it hackable at launch and a 1 hour battery life. sooooooo lesser of evils wins. Remember PSP master keys are known so PSP games have to be played via emulation or they could use those keys to find the Vita master keys.
