what about coming up with a custom plugin that allows for, say, 3 different categories being able to post in different areas of the site? You have quicknews in the side bar, an area dedicated to bets (maybe above the sidebar? But it only shows post titles and not post content? Or maybe even just put down the post content, but keep it limited to one line; these shouldn't show up in the archives however, except or maybe the category archives), and, new idea, a mini news feed. This would be a scrolling news feed similar to featured news (maybe even post under it) that has quick, small news items (not necessarily linked or even in post, but a scrolling text/marquee like on news channels, etc) like an overheard rumor, an announced game, etc. Could be managed via the admin panel with the text you want to scroll. Maybe even possible to separate news items with a small version of the site logo icons?

Just throwing those out there.

Ideas noted. Don't have time to work on that right now though.

This technically isn't a forum feature, but it relates to the site.  Is there any way to make it so that when you tag someone in a post, you can use their displayed name?

For example:  Using @Oly in a comment would tag Oly instead of technically needing to use @oly1kenobi

Not really sorry. That's a built in function of BuddyPress. Reason why it can't be a display name is because multiple people could have the same display name.
