George Leutz is not the world’s luckiest gamer. He is however, damnably persistent. On Saturday, he made his second attempt to beat the 28-year-old Q*bert world record. He failed, due to fatigue. But this wasn’t just a quick score attack. Leutz conceeded defeat after a brain-shattering 54 hours at the cabinet.
How far off success was he? The current world record, set in 1983 by Rob Gerhardt, stands at 33, 273, 520, meaning that by the end of George’s more successful second attempt he was still only about 75% of the way there. The completion time to beat the record is estimated at 70 hours.
