McWeddings may not be what every little girl dreamed about, but they are gaining interest in Hong Kong. Could America be next?
With the global economy being what it is, young couples may consider a far more casual and inexpensive way to tie the knot like getting hitched at their favorite fast-food eatery. When the locale is their local McDonald’s, the fete is deemed a McWedding.
In Hong Kong, they even have special deals for the happy couple who want to try something different. The “Warm and sweet wedding package” comes in at about $1,300 and includes wedding gifts, invitations, decorations featuring Ronald and the Hamburglar, and about $400 worth of the famous fast food. Upgrades could include a “white balloon” gown rental ($165), balloon corsage ($11), balloon wedding cake ($88) and/or a large pink McDonald’s backdrop ($321), Reuters reports.
“They date here, they grew their love here, so when they have this important day, they want to come over here,” Shirley Chang, the managing director of Hong Kong’s McDonald’s outlets, told Reuters.
McWeddings shouldn’t shock anyone anymore. Just this week there were reports of a couple who renewed their vows Sunday at a White Castle in Louisville, Ky., and on Saturday a British couple had their wedding reception at their local Kentucky Fried Chicken.
When one loving couple got married at an Illinois Taco Bell in 2009, the groom’s mother said it was the lack of pressure that made it so successful. “This is the way to go — there’s no stress,” Kathy Brooks said.
Although there have only been two McWeddings booked this year in Hong Kong, Chang told Reuters there are 70 couples “in talks” about having their special day under the golden arches.
