After the recent success of Motorstorm Apocalypse, Evolution studios has decided to release its second foray into the handheld genre, Motorstorm RC. The game has players controlling RC cars on sixteen tracks taken from all previous Motorstorm games. Its the best of both worlds, with an arcade-like racing experience, and modern day online compatibility. It will be released Spring 2012 as a PSN only downloadable title, but it will be playable on both the Vita and PS3, including a four-player split-screen mode on the PS3.
Split-screen has slowly been dying over the years, so it’s good to know that split-screen is being included in this downloadable title. Cross-platform play has not been confirmed, but it has been strongly hinted at. Game developers should take a hint and start bringing back this feature. More details after the jump
It was an unfortunate release date that Motorstorm Apocalypse had chosen; it’s no fault (pun not intended) of Evolution Studios, of course, but it does almost highlight the lack of reason for these races to be taken place. Like most earthquake-based movies, the plot isn’t the main draw; it’s the spectacular special effects and the chance to witness a horrific event as entertainment. In this instance, the entertainment is stunning; with collapsing buildings, the ground opening up, and even a tornado, there is always something waiting to completely change the track on the next lap.
Apocalypse is the third game in the series (4th if you include the PSP outing) and sticks to the well established formula of racing in dangerous terrain, avoiding environmental hazards, and other racers. After the desert, a pacific island, and the arctic, Motorstorm has headed to urban pastures, but, obviously, this wouldn’t be exciting enough, so enter the earthquake. In fact, it hasn’t even deemed an earthquake dangerous enough, as the Apocalypse subtitle eludes, it’s the end of civilization and there are two warring factions to drive between whilst you race, if the constant earthquakes changing the track wasn’t enough.

Earlier today, Sony has announced that they have either canceled or streamlined ongoing projects in a few of their UK-based studios; namely London Studio, Studio Liverpool, and Evolution Studios. As to why the move was made, Sony stated:
“This decision was made following an internal review of all games and it was deemed that with the incredibly strong list of exclusive first party titles coming up both this year and in the near future, resource should be reallocated to enhance those projects closer to completion.”
The studios themselves will still be a part of Sony, and they don’t have any plans for closures, but it is not known whether staff at the studios will need to be downsized or not. No word on what projects have been canned, either.
The official North American release date for Evolution Studios’ PS3 exclusive racer, MotorStorm Apocalypse has been confirmed for April 12, 2011. The European version of the off road racer will release a few weeks prior on March 16th. PlayStationBlog
