Codemasters Creating New FPS
Posted by JimmyMagnum in PS3 software, Talk on February 19th, 2010
Codemasters has been at work for the past 12 months developing a new FPS (yes, another one), and it will be running on the EGO engine (the same one as DiRT. GRiD, and Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising). Given that, at least, it will have a cool look to it.
The development of the game will be headed by Creative Director Stuart Black, who did work on Criterion Games’ Black back in 2006 (which was one of last generation’s last few hyped up games). Though Black only got above-average reviews (around 75-80% overall), it was packed with action and a robust damaging engine (not surprising, since it came from the same folks who did the Burnout series). Hopefully Codemasters will build upon that original concept, since Criterion currently has no public plans for a sequel to Black.
No material had been released for the game yet (like trailers and screenshots), so it remains to be seen whether or not it resembles Black. If the damage engine and all that is improved upon, it should be good fun at least!
Upcoming Featured Games Events in Home
Posted by JimmyMagnum in Home on November 12th, 2009
Looks like Sony has started sending out Home newsletters. Anyways, checked my mail and this month’s feature is at the bottom of the email which lists a sampling of upcoming Featured Game events that will take place in the Central Plaza.
For those who have not read my previous news post, the new Featured Game parties take place every night for Online-Enabled games to launch into within Home’s Central Plaza. Every day should be a new game and the feature only just kicked off Tuesday with the release of Modern Warfare 2. Here’s the list they have within the email (remember, it’s only a sampling, but there are new games everyday).
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves // Saturday, November 14th
NBA 2K10 // Thursday, November 19th
Borderlands // Sunday, November 22nd
Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising // Friday, November 27th
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 // Tuesday, December 1st
Brutal Legend // Saturday, December 5th
FIFA 10 // Monday, December 14th
I’m not sure if this carries over to holidays or not, though. All events take place between 6:00 – 10:00PM PT (9:00PM – 12:00AM ET). There currently isn’t a complete list of what games will be featured from day to day, but if I come across one, I’ll post it if anyone is interested.
Wither Multiplatform?
Here’s a list of (arguably) the most anticipated multiplatform games for later this year:
- Guitar Hero + Band Hero Sequels
- Rock Band Beatles + Guitar Hero Van Halen
- DJ Hero
- Tony Hawk: Ride
- Modern Warfare 2
- Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising
- Assassin’s Creed 2
- Brutal Legend
- Borderlands
- Alpha Protocol
- Tekken 6
- Dragon Age Origins
- Need For Speed Shift + Blur
I know that almost every one of the above has a passionate niche audience. Modern Warfare 2 is already guaranteed to be a top seller, and I see Brutal Legend and Assassin’s Creed 2 top many wish lists. But personally, nothing on that list looks exciting or interesting, and I suspect that this perspective is not at all uncommon.
Please don’t let me offend anyone, tastes are subjective and all that, but it’s striking to me that this year’s multiplatform releases are so bland. Throughout this decade, the music genre seemed to be growing more exciting and innovative every year, until it stalled in 2008, and now, it seems as stale as it could possibly be.
Contrast this, with PSS exclusive releases. Uncharted 2 and Gran Turismo 5 both look like epic, boundary-pushing releases that I couldn’t be more excited for. The new Ratchet game (Crack in Time) looks absolutely amazing. Both Demon Souls and EyePet are new IPs that I’m dying to try. PixelJunk Shooter looks to be very promising. And the updates to LittleBigPlanet and Home look amazing.
I don’t think it’s just because they are Sony/PS3 products either. There are plenty of big PS3 titles I didn’t like at all, and even looking outside the PS3 most of the most exciting games (from my perspective) are exclusive to other platforms (the MMO and mini-browser-game titles and Starcraft 2 on PC, Mario Galaxy 2 on Wii, several DS titles, a couple on PSP, GTA Episodes and Forza 3 looks great on 360, etc).
There are a few upcoming multiplaform titles I’m excited about: Red Dead Redemption definitely tops my list and Bioshock 2 looks great. But overall, I’m surprised at how much of the great games coming out are platform exclusives, and particularly, PS3 exclusives.
Would you agree? Are most of the best games of the time exclusive to one platform?
