When SOCOM 4 was first announced at last years GDC, a lot of skeptics and fans alike ponder to the fact that the game will support the upcoming PlayStation Move motion controller. But no worries folks, Zipper assures SOCOM fans that the game will also be compatible with your good ole DualShock 3 controller. More Info after jump.
MAG is an acronym for Massive Action Game and boy is it massive, full of action and erm… a game. Sporting 256 player battles, the only game to do so this generation, MAG offers something truly exceptional to differentiate itself from the rest of the FPS market. Fortunately Zipper has designed the game from the ground up to accommodate the high number of players by dividing them up into squads. Each 128 man team is made up of 4 platoons that consist of 32 players; these are then broken down into 8 man squads, which is what you’ll be focusing on at first. The leaders of these squads and platoons is decided by rank, so the more experienced players will be issuing out the orders to the inexperienced pretty much like a real life army…
Zipper has revealed the official stats from MAG’s Beta at the game’s main blog.
Before the end of the beta on January 10, there were well over a million downloads (860,000 in North America alone) of the MAG beta client worldwide. Of the 619,000+ people who gained at least one point of experience, 52,846 of them qualified for Squad Leader, 10,249 people qualified for Platoon Leader, 3,181 warriors made it all the way to OIC, and a mere 143 diehard soldiers made it to the level 60 experience cap. The breakdown of PMC preference ended up like this: Valor – 38.7%, Raven – 37.2%, SVER – 24.1% Who won the Beta 5.0 Shadow War? Despite their smaller numbers, SVER took the Sabotage war – barely edging out Raven. Meanwhile, Valor took the Domination title; narrowly escaping a loss to Raven’s flock. More than 225 years worth of battles were played out over the week — with an average of 3.2 hours played per person. For the third beta period in a row, of all PSN users who participated in our testing phase, chennault2424 was the most prolific – he earned nearly 110,000 XP; making his grand total for the last three testing periods in excess of 360,000 experience points. Though chennault was the top guy, the remaining Top 5 list of players included My_Digital_Enemy, gomi-bukuro (jp), basquasher (jp), and Behike (jp).
The full game will also boast 38 trohies.

No, this isn’t to sign up in an attempt to join (which was a week ago or so), but rather, actual entry into the beta. I got my email today saying that I have been chosen to participate in the beta. I am currently in the process of downloading the file (which is 298MB so it should be pretty quick to download.) There are a few bits of information contained within the email:
- MAG Beta will only be available to play between the hours of 10AM to 1PM-PDT and 5PM and 8PM Monday through Friday
- MAG will be showcased at GamesCom and need as many players playing as possible, so these are the scheduled times for GamesCom (all are in PDT):
- August 19th 12AM to 1PM
- August 20th 1AM to 1PM
- August 21st 12AM to 1PM
- August 22nd 12AM to 11AM
- August 23rd 12AM to 9AM
This is more of a serious beta test than a lot of the ones I’ve been in (which were more or less exclusive demos). They seem to be really serious about bug reporting, etc. so hopefully we’ll be able to see any much needed improvement for any serious bugs that may happen to show up. The MAG Beta Central site is where that will be taken care of (as are pretty much all other betas).
This is one hell of an ambitious game. Here’s hoping Zipper Interactive can pull this one off! If anyone else made it into the beta, I’ll see YOU on the field!
Alrighty, after it downloaded and installed, you then had to get a 33MB patch (1.01) and then when it starts up again, it goes through an in-game update, which is about 2 GBs, so it’s going to take a lot longer to get it going than expected hehe. Good thing I do periodical clean ups on drive space.
Assuming no delays between then and now, Zipper Interactive’s game, MAG, will hit store shelves on January 26th, 2010. No word yet as to when the beta will start. Source
