History of Console Prices
Some enterprising dude over at Curmudgeon Gamer went and did something cool. He put together a couple charts. One that showed the release prices of many gaming consoles. So you get the Atari 2600 at $200, the Neo Geo at $650, the PlayStation 2 at $300, etc. It’s interesting, really to see that lots of the consoles were released at the $200 price point.
But you gotta know there’s more. Inflation, of course! The next chart shows the same console prices, adjusted for inflation. What are the top three?
- Neo Geo ($993.65)
- 3DO ($967.89)
- Intellivision ($825.62)
Out of the 26 consoles, the high-end PS3 places 7th, behind the famous Atari 2600 and the envious Intellivision. The Xbox 360 places 12th.
