New Strategic Plans for the Call of Duty Franchise

Activision Publishing, announced their new strategic plans for the Call of Duty franchise today. They announced the formation of a new business unit to expand the franchise “with the same focus seen in its Blizzard(R) Entertainment business unit”.

Mike Griffith, President and CEO of Activision Publishing stated, “2010 will be another important year for the Call of Duty franchise. In addition to continued catalog sales, new downloadable content from Infinity Ward and a new Call of Duty release, we are excited about the opportunity to bring the franchise to new geographies, genres and players.”

Activision reiterated the fact that Treyarch (developers of COD3 and COD:World at War), is developing a new COD game to be released this fall, and that Infinity Ward is creating two downloadable map packs for MW2 to also be released this year.

The major new announcement concerning most fans of the series is that newly formed Sledgehammer Games, is creating a new COD game for 2011. They said the new game “will extend the franchise into the action-adventure genre”. Sledgehammer games was formed by the former heads of Visceral Games, Glen A. Schofield and Michael Condrey. They are best known for Dead Space.

Activision also discussed bringing the COD franchise to Asian markets.
