[PS3 Review] Magic 2014: Duels of the Planeswalkers Expansion

The Magic 2014 Expansion adds many hours of new gameplay:

• Five new playable decks: Unlock 280 unique cards over multiple battles • New campaign levels: Battle through six new single-player campaign levels as you explore the planes of Ravnica and Kamigawa • Five new challenges: Fiendish puzzles test your strategic thinking

This expansion adds some more depth to the original game as it includes 5 new decks, 5 new challenges, and a bunch of new campaign levels.

The new campaign mode is essentially an introductory mode to the 5 new decks that come available. You play against the decks before you get to play with them showing you the strategy of how you can play them. I enjoyed the new campaign mode it had 10 new levels. In some of the levels, the opponents made the same moves every time which means that once you learn them you could alter your strategy to beat them easily. If it was against one of the new decks then it was random what cards would be played, but the AI did try to use the same strategy on every occurrence. It took about 3 hours to complete this may vary depending upon your skill level.

Once beaten it unlocks the revenge campaign against the 5 new decks with tweaked formats.

The new decks include Lords of Darkness(Black), Hall of Champions(White, Green, and Blue), Sword of the Samurai(White and Red), Dodge and Burn(Blue and Red), and Sylvan Might(Green).

Sword of the Samurai Deck adds Bushido cards to the mix so when they block or are blocked they get +X/+X for whatever their Bushido number was. Definitely fun to play as and my personal favorite of the new decks.

Lords of Darkness is a heavy demon deck with creatures with removal options to put different creatures in play. It also has some very large demons in it. It can take a bit to get going put once you do it can be devastating.

Hall of the Champions is an exalted deck. A creature with exalted gains +1/+1 when attacking alone. My least favorite of the new decks, I find decks with 3 colors can be quite troublesome and exalted only works if you attack with one creature.

Dodge and Burn is a heavy burn and counter burn heavy deck. Interesting deck with some strong instants and sorcery’s. There are multiple occasions where all creatures on the board can be wiped out.

Sylvan Might is an elf heavy mono green deck that can lead up to some strong creature combinations. This deck can yield strong results if you are patient very similar in style to “Avacyn’s Glory” from the regular game in creating lots of smaller creatures with some bigger options along the way.

The game also added 5 new challenges all that took some proper thinking and timing to complete. The final one is really difficult. Kudos to those who figure it out without any help.

There are new portraits and trophies with expansion as well.

The trophies did not take long to unlock most of them, playing through the campaign and the 5 challenges should help you unlock most of them.
