[PS4] Odin Sphere Leifthrasir Review

Odin Sphere Review

Odin Sphere Leifthrasir is a full remake of the PS2 Classic Odin Sphere. The hand-drawn graphics have been reworked from the ground up, and the resolution has been optimized to 1080p. The game now looks absolutely stunning, even more so than the original version! So the big question is: how well does this remarkable game play on the PS4? Let’s find out in our Odin Sphere Leifthrasir Review!

Change the fate of the world when the end of days draws near in Odin Sphere Leifthrasir.

The HD remake of Vanillaware’s PlayStation®2 masterpiece Odin Sphere is told in five tales from the perspectives of five unique protagonists. Odin Sphere Leifthrasir expresses the original game with glorious HD graphics in Vanillaware’s renowned style, expanded worlds with new monsters, fully voiced story scenes, and a fine-tuned refreshing combat and RPG system to perfect the gameplay.

Odin Sphere Leifthrasir – Remake Announcement Trailer

If you like games such as Dragon’s Crown, then you are in for an absolute treat with Odin Sphere Leifthrasir. The story is played out as a series of books, with each book having its own story and protagonist. As you boot up the game, you start in the attic, following a little girl called Alice (and her cute cat Socrates), who will pick up the first book and sit down to read it. Let’s now discuss the five books and their characters.

Odin Sphere can be played in either Classic or Refined mode. Classic is the original PlayStation 2 version of the game, and I thought it was a nice touch to include it here. Refined mode gives you the awesome updated graphics and 1080p resolution, and is really stunning. I mostly played this mode for this review, because that’s the main reason why we got a new version on PS4!

Here is a quick round-up of the characters you’ll be following through this game.

GWENDOLYN is the youngest daughter of the Demon King Odin. She witnessed the death of her older sister Griselda, and she is given a Crystal Psypher spear by her. Gwendolyn is torn between her feelings for her arch-enemy Oswald and her loyalty to her father, King Odin.

CORNELIUS is a prince from Pooka. He has a deep love for Velvet, but on his way to a meeting with her, he is ambushed and transformed into a Pooka (a kind of rabbit in Odin Sphere’s universe). He wields a Crystal Psypher sword, and he will discover that he has been betrayed on his journey…

MERCEDES lost her mother to King Odin, and she inherited a Crystal Crossbow Psypher. Mercedes has an uprising on her hands to deal with, and she declared war on King Odin, the man who killed her mother.

OSWALD is a shadow knight (and my favorite character). He wields a Crystal Psypher Sword. Oswald is a well-known dragon slayer. He was abandoned at a young age, and he eventually discovers that he has been betrayed by his adoptive father. Because of that, he eventually goes to work for King Odin, which gives him a ring and his daughter Gwendolyn in return for killing a dragon.

VELVET is one of the uncursed survivors of Valentine, which was destroyed by the Cauldron (an evil entity that King Odin tries to get the controls of). Velvet wields a Crystal Chain Psypher. She later is revealed to be King Odin’s illegitimate daughter (and thus she hates him) and Gwendolyn’s half sister.

These are the characters of the game and snippets of their stories (books). If you like the sound of them, then you’re in for a treat. All five books are centered around the Cauldron Wars which started over the control of the limitless energy. One by one the prophecies began to get fulfilled, and Armageddon is about to happen. The story plays out the same way but from five different perspectives. Also, completing all five stories will unlock the sixth book called Armageddon. On top of this, there is a 7th book to unlock, but that depends on the correct order of characters you choose to fight the final bosses in Armageddon, so be mindful of who you choose – the wrong characters will not unlock the book to play, so good luck discovering that!

Each character has a Psypher weapon, which uses the life force of defeated enemies to give its wearer more strength. You can unlock abilities and passive skills. If you have enough phozons – luminous purple energy which you collect from defeated enemies – you can upgrade your weapon and skills to max levels to become the world’s savior. Along with leveling your weapon and skills, you can level up your characters, and there are two methods for this: either through natural gameplay by defeating enemies and gaining EXP or by eating fruits, and food picked up from harvesting any seeds and from visiting restaurants. If you have recipes, the restaurant will add them to the menu for you to try – this is the most efficient way to level up quickly, and is the best one I’ve seen in years!

Odin Sphere Leifthrasir is a highly addictive game with a full trophy count including a Platinum, and all the trophy hunters out there are going to love this game since nothing is missable! The graphics, soundtrack, and the game itself is perfect in every way. I have yet to finish the game and earn my Platinum which is what I am doing in between writing other reviews!
