ModNationâ„¢ Racers Launch Trailer
Modnation Racers is a game that was released back in 2010 from United Front Games – the team that later went on to create the excellent Sleeping Dogs. It was a spin on PlayStation’s Play, Create, Share style of gaming we had seen in LittleBigPlanet.
This was a fun game with an emphasis on creating your own customer characters and customer cars for the game. It was an ambitious title that succeeded on most fronts. The character creation was great! You started off with base pieces, and as you played the story mode, you found more stuff you could use for your creations. Your character creations were easy to make and easy to share – same goes for cars and tracks.
The game had a great story mode, which is unusual for a cart racer. Completing the story mode was fun, but the one big holdup was the difficulty in later levels. The one thing that made it harder than most cart racers was the constant barrage of power-ups. In this game, you can stack your power-ups up to three times making them more powerful as you go. By the time it reaches the third level more often than not it goes after however is in first place. So it makes it really easy for most people to save up and screw the person in front regularly. It’s as if every racer could end up having a blue shell to throw at the first place.
Other than that this was a great game with a solid online community making great creations. The community is still going strong, and if you check the web page, you can see that people are still creating new stuff and racing. This is one of those games that I hope gets another shot on PS4. They did create a PS Vita game, but it felt a bit stripped down and incomplete. And sure, the team also developed LittleBigPlanet Karting, but it did not have the same feel.
Unfortunately, United Front Gaming shut down in 2016, but hopefully Sony can give Modnation Racers another go on their current console since the community is certainly there.
