[PlayStation 4] Super Hydorah Review
Fun old-school styled shoot 'em up8
Super Hydorah from Locomalito, Gryzor87 and Abylight Studios is a fast-paced space shooter on PS4. Learn more about it in our Super Hydorah review
Super Hydorah is a game that pays homage to classic shoot ‘em up of ages past such as Life Force, R-Type, Gradius, and Thunder Force, to name a few. As is the case for said games in the genre, you’ll be able to collect power-ups in Super Hydorah to improve the overall performance of your ship, which is a must if you want to survive the deadly onslaught of enemies out to get you.
In this one, you must collect green orbs to improve your current primary weapon and red orbs to improve your current secondary weapon. As you progress in the game, you’ll get a new weapon after completing a level, and you’ll choose your weapons before starting your next mission. If you’re in need of extra ships, you should be ready to collect the hearts which increase your overall count. If you collect blue arrows you can increase your speed up to three times, and the purple shield will create an energy field around your ship. There are also thunders which increase your stock of special weapons, up to a max of three. And if you’re playing in co-op, there is a red cross like power-up that can revive your companion during a mission.
Controls are simple and to the point, since you will move around with the left analog stick or the D-Pad, fire with the X button and use your special attack with the circle button. Those are all the inputs you’ll need to worry about during your run! As you complete each level, you will run into branching paths that will lead you towards a different set of levels, thus increasing the replay value for players who want to see everything that the game has to offer.
A single hit can destroy your ship, so you need to make sure you pay attention to all enemies and their attacks or else you will end up replaying the same stage over and over again. Levels are short and last a few minutes, as was the case for stages in good old-fashioned arcade releases, and at the end of a level, you’ll run into a boss with a specific movement and attack pattern you need to decipher to destroy it well. Some bosses are more aggressive or harder than others, but in the end, they all add to the overall enjoyment you’ll get from playing this one from start to finish.
Along with the main campaign mode, there is also a Robot Chase mode which is strictly for two players. For this mode, you must create a laser link between father and son to trap space jellies that can then be turned into little jellies. Little jellies must then be quickly collected to obtain a higher bonus. As you fly around you, need to be aware of floating mines since they can deal considerable damage to you and, if you’re not careful, will end your run.
The game includes a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy at the end of the road, with a nice variety of objectives to complete. These include completing the game, as expected, to completing a mission with an accumulated score of 50,000 or more, and doing the same in increments of 50,000, up to completing a mission with an accumulated score of 500,000 or more. There are also trophies awarded for doing casual stuff such as finding an escaping astronaut, a pink elephant or a giant green egg.
Super Hydorah is a solid new release on PlayStation that does a good job of paying homage to the classics while also doing its own thing. The gameplay is fun, and the music really fits the action. The enemies, while hard after the first couple of stages, never feel cheap, and the bosses will definitely test your skills. The bite-sized nature of each level you take on, and the weapon progress will keep you coming back for more until you’ve managed to complete a full run through one of the potential routes before diving right back into it for another go. I highly recommend that you give Super Hydorah a go on PlayStation – I’m sure you’re going to love it!
