[Beyond PlayStation] Knights of Pen and Paper +1 Deluxier Edition Review
Knights of Pen and Paper +1 Deluxier Edition is a fun console version of a tabletop game with great pixel art, fun gameplay and a good story. Learn more about it in our Knights of Pen and Paper +1 Deluxier Edition review!
The game follows a group of friends, one of which is the dungeon master, who are playing a game that is of the explore dungeons and defeat dragons variety. You start with an empty table that you join as the only player, but as you progress that table with fill up with other players. Two can be chosen, and you can then buy new players with the in-game currency. You can also purchase extra seats for more friends to play, for a max party of five. Watching from afar is the dungeon master, who reads the story, sets up the scene and provides you with challenges that you can accept or decline.
The variety of characters you can select for your party is pretty awesome, and they range from family members like your little brother, to even the pizza guy joining you for some fun adventuring. You also have a variety of classes to select from, adding clerics, knights, mages and more. You can also select the race of each party member from the available options, to give some diversity to your group. Each player you add to your table also has a range of abilities and buffs, as well as a variety of attacks, so there’s a lot of room for you to experiment to find the right mix for your quest.
The table and the dungeon master are always there as you play the game, with changing backdrops as the dungeon master reads and moves the story along. It’s a great way to immerse you in the adventure, as you would during a good old-fashioned session in the real world, as you decide how to approach each battle and quest. You can select to battle enemies as well as how to fight them, do fetch quests, escort quests, and more.
The combat works in typical turn-based fashion, and you can level up your party and earn gold which can be used for upgrading abilities, purchasing items, and also, as mentioned before, purchase extra spots at the table for more friends to join the fun. You can also use the gold for decorative purposes to make the room prettier or to change the appearance of your dungeon master if you want to.
Characters can talk to each other or the dungeon master by using dialogue options, and I have to say that the general banter, especially from your interactions with the dungeon master, is very amusing. You’ll get a nice chuckle here and there as you interact with the group and the dungeon master, adding to the overall immersion into this digital representation of a great hobby.
Knights of Pen and Paper +1 Deluxier Edition is a very fun and unique experience that is definitely worth your time and money. The game’s premise, gameplay mechanics, retro art style, and humor make this a very fun and excellent addition to the PlayStation 4 library, and after playing this one I’m more than up for playing the sequel!
