[PS4] Haunted Dungeons: Hyakki Castle Review
Haunted Dungeons: Hyakki Castle is a challenging and creepy dungeon crawler now on PlayStation 4. Learn more about it in our Haunted Dungeons: Hyakki Castle review!
I love a good dungeon crawler, so I was more than ready to dive into Haunted Dungeons: Hyakki Castle. What sets this one apart from most of its fellow genre entries is that this one is based on teamwork. Your party is trapped in a nightmarish castle, and your only objective is to escape, and this requires all members to work together. You must solve puzzles, and fight the many enemies you will face, all leading up to some solid boss battles. There are some survival mechanics thrown in as well, making this a challenging experience.
One of the core gameplay mechanics for this one is being able to split your party of four characters into two groups. By making the most of this, you’ll be able to outflank your enemies – having two party members in the front and two at its back would indeed allow you to deal some massive damage if you plan things right! You can’t just split your party and expect all enemies to fall before you since the system does get a bit of trial and error for you to get the hang of things.
For starters, when doing this, the screen will split. Playing in split-screen can be very distracting for some players, so do keep this in mind! And because you’re able to split your party, the game’s puzzles will take this into consideration. You might, for example, need to stand on pressure pads to open doors, and splitting your party will play into this. The party can be split into two groups with a simple press of a button, and if you play with AI bots, then one team will remain stationary while you control the other. You can then quickly press a button to switch to control the other team.
As for the survival mechanics, there are hunger meters to keep an eye on, since if they run out, it is bad news for you. You can, of course, rest for a bit to recover some of your energy, but in order to fully recover you will need food, so you will be spending some of your time searching for food to stay alive. There is also a ton of equipment to find with a rarity system that reminded me of the beloved Diablo series. As you gain better stuff, I suggest you destroy the weaker items since they will be of no use for your adventure.
The enemies are not that varied as there are around three or so enemy types per floor and there are around 15 floors in total. Most enemies can be killed using regular attack as you make sure to dodge their attacks. You might die a bit at first, but you’ll get the basics after making some mistakes. As long as you’re not cornered by enemies, you will definitely have a fighting chance. Pay attention to enemies, learn how they behave, and stay well fed to have a chance of surviving the castle. It’s that simple!
Haunted Dungeons: Hyakki Castle is not a perfect game as it does have its flaws, not to mention that the split-screen gameplay mechanic might prove to be uncomfortable for some players. But if you’re looking for a dungeon crawler on PlayStation 4 that will provide you with a hearty challenge, then Haunted Dungeons: Hyakki Castle will definitely do that.
