[Beyond PlayStation] Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics Review
Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics is out on Nintendo Switch! Learn more of this Lovecraft inspired turn-based strategy game in our Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics review.
Using a World War II theme in a strategy game is a combination as old as the war itself, but what if you took the despicable and horrible villains that are the Nazis and you combined them with eldritch monsters straight out of the deep occult? You get even nastier Nazis, which means double the fun when shooting them! The question is, how are you going to do that?
In Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics you control a small squad qualified against supernatural forces squad that has been tasked with stopping the dwellings of the Nazis into the occult. The story is as straight forward as that sounds, but quite enjoyable to learn more before every mission. Now, we all know that horror isn’t exactly the first thing that comes to mind when you think of turn-based tactics games, and you’d be right! Horror wouldn’t be the right word to describe it, it’s more of a thing that you don’t know what to expect next, that you get this feeling at the back of your neck that something is wrong but can’t put your finger on what. Long story short, a Lovecraftian feel and style that I’m sure those familiar with the author’s work can relate to. This translates into the gameplay as well, as you never really know where the enemy can come from, forcing you to accept the unpredictable and wait to see what happens.
The way the game works revolves around being spotted by the enemy, using covers and most importantly, AP and MP (Action Points and Momentum Points) which each let you use different moves or actions, like reloading, attacking (with main or secondary weapons), moving, flanking, special abilities and more. The things you can do vary by character, as they each have their own stats and skills, and you can acquire MP in many ways too. And speaking of stats, you really, really need to keep an eye on your squad. Rumor has it that the monsters can drive even the strongest mind insane.
All things considered, Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics is a solid game that states its core loud and clear but can get a bit repetitive after a while, as the visuals and audio don’t have that much of a variety between missions, and neither do the missions themselves after a while, but it’s a solid base that can be enjoyed without much trouble. If you are looking for a turn-based strategy game with a little flare of tabletop and a dash of eldritch madness, certainly worth a look. If you are looking for a more hardcore and challenging experience, then this might not be the game for you.
