If you’re a fan of old-school retro releases of an arcade nature, then you’re probably a fan of the Johnny Turbo’s Arcade series on Nintendo Switch. This time around, it’s time to talk about Johnny Turbo’s Arcade: Nitro Ball, a game that offers a single-player option as well as a local co-op multiplayer experience, so you can play with your friends at home or on the go. As is the case for other Johnny Turbo’s Arcade releases, this is a short one since it is how arcade games are supposed to be. It has only a handful of levels that include some pinball elements along with the shooting aspects. Each level in Nitro Ball is themed, and you get to choose which of the three available characters you want to play as. Your goal, as expected, is to defeat all enemies on your path, with frantic gameplay.

The control set up is pretty simple since you’ll move around with the left analog stick or the D-Pad and use one button for shooting at enemies, and another button for launching powerful bombs, and that’s about it. There is no complicated controller setup, making it an easy-to-pick-up kind of game. This is good for arcade-style games since it allows players to focus on the action, and to get started right away.

If you succeed, you will get a nice boost to your score, and might also get a power-up or two. One of the best power-ups is the ability to turn yourself into a ball so that you can wreak havoc all over the screen.

Nitro Ball is a crazy one, and this shows in the five very unique levels you’ll take on. These include levels such as Ghost Town and Strange Football, and thanks to these themes, along the way, you will encounter zany enemies and bosses. Some elements of the game will remind you of the great movies of the 1980s, such as, say, the beloved The Terminator. Will you be able to pick up on all the movie references?
