Visual novel Root Double -Before Crime * After Days- Xtend Edition from Sekai Project and Regista is ready to go on Nintendo Switch. Learn more about this one in our Root Double -Before Crime * After Days- Xtend Edition review!

In visual novel Root Double -Before Crime * After Days- Xtend Edition from Sekai Project and Regista, you’ll take on a visual novel adventure presented from two different points of view. The story takes place in the year 2030, in the isolated research city of Rokumei. Everything was business as usual until several explosions go off in the nuclear research facility known as LABO. Since a nuclear explosion is very bad news, the city sends in the elite squad known as Sirius to take care of things. Think of Sirius as elite firefighters who are only deployed when things get really bad. Unfortunately, LABO’s nuclear reactor has a meltdown… and there are survivors and members of Sirius trapped inside! Radiation is leaking everywhere, and there are not enough anti-radiation meds to last for all of those present until the lockdown ends.

You’ll be able to take on the story from two different perspectives – hence the before and after in the game’s long and extended title. Behind all of this will be the Senses Sympathy System – SSS for short. Emotions are at the center of all human interactions, and this is even more apparent during a crisis such as this one. Based on your interactions with other characters and on if you can manage to earn their trust or not, the story will go down this or that path. As expected, this also means there are different endings for you to reach for each overall storyline.

This will be accomplished by interacting with the SSS interface during specific branching parts of the game’s stories. Once you activate the interface, you’ll be able to switch between the characters in that specific scene, moving the slider for each one to different values, from 0 to max – a full bar. This represents the trust placed on each character, and this includes the main character you’re controlling! Depending on the value for each slider, the story segment will play in a different way.

Root Double -Before Crime * After Days- Xtend Edition Review -2

It’s hard to review a game like visual novel Root Double -Before Crime * After Days- Xtend Edition without going into spoiler territory, which would ruin your experience with a game for which story is a big component of the overall experience. But in order to illustrate the impact of the SSS, allow me to briefly talk about a sequence early in the game. Your main character for the After side of the story is actually the leader of Sirius, but due to the aforementioned explosion and subsequent events early in the game, he loses his memory!

Because of this, he does not remember who he is and what his role should be, and he’s obviously not as agile or intuitive as his role as leader of Sirius would require him to be. But when he listens to the voice of someone asking for help, he instinctively rushes to the scene to try and help out. If you place your trust in him with the SSS, he’ll end up rushing into the room, trying to solve something for which he’s not currently in his prime. Since he doesn’t know what his next step will be, the heat from the flames starts to get to him, and then the smoke from the fire fills up his lungs. He collapses onto the ground and dies. Game over!

If, on the other hand, you decide to place your trust in one of your team members, who is always ready to go, countering any issues that she runs into, you will be able to survive this initial sequence while also saving the girl who had been trapped within the room on fire. Every segment during which you can interact by way of the SSS will have more than one outcome, which is why you should always make sure that you save often so that you can recover from one of the many game overs endings you’ll get during this long journey.
