Rusty Spout Rescue Adventure from 7 Raven Studios is a colorful arcade-style puzzle game on Nintendo Switch. Learn more in our Rusty Spout Rescue Adventure review!
In Rusty Spout Rescue Adventure from 7 Raven Studios, you’ll be taking on a colorful puzzle game of the Puzzle Bobble – a.k.a. Bust-a-Move – variety in which you’ll take on the journey of the titular character. Rusty Spout is a lonely but honest pirate who sails around the world, always searching for new adventures, always ready to help those who need it. Unfortunately, Cocco is not a good pirate. Cocco ends up kidnapping all of the children from Rusty’s village, which is why Rusty must set forth to rescue all of them.
Rusty’s quest to rescue all of the kidnapped children will take him through five different worlds, each one with ten levels to complete. Along with completing the different puzzle stages – with an always increasing difficulty that bumps up the challenge stage after stage – you’ll also have to deal with Cocco’s monsters that are waiting for you at the end of each world for an epic boss battle.
As for how you’ll play in Rusty Spout Rescue Adventure, you’ll have to rotate the cannon at the bottom of the screen by pressing left and right on the left analog stick or the D-Pad, aiming where you want to shoot a ball with the A button. Since you need to match at least three balls of the same color to make all of the connected balls disappear, you can press the B, L, or R buttons to swap the currently selected ball with the next one that is displayed to the left of the cannon, so that you can make each shot count.
Some levels will feature one or more Blockers that you’ll need to take into consideration. These can be Gold Blockers, Silver Blockers, or Skull Blockers. For, Gold Blockers, you must remove all balls before it passes the ship border. For Silver Blockers, you need to make it fall before it passes the ship border, and it will fall immediately after you remove all balls attached to it. For Skull Blockers, you must remove all balls in the level since there’s no way to destroy them.
There are also special balls that will come into play in some of the levels. There are four different types of balls, and each one will have a different effect. The one that has a bomb will explode when it’s touched by a ball shot from the cannon, making the balls around it fall. The one with a rainbow will make all balls of the same color that hits it will disappear from the board. The one with lighting will remove a full row of balls when hit. The last one will have a glowing ball on its center with four arrows around it, and it will take the color of the ball that touches it.
In Boss Battles, a boss will have three balls over it that represent its health. After several seconds pass, the boss will attack, sending more balls onto the board. You’ll be able to counterattack by filling up the balls on the right side of the screen by popping many balls of each corresponding color. The special balls I mentioned above will also be helpful during boss battles, with the exception of the one that has four arrows around it.
Once you advance in Story Mode, you’ll get to unlock Endless Mode and Battle Mode. Endless Mode is just what it sounds like. You’ll be playing on a single board as you take on an endless barrage of bubbles to pop, as you aim to try and beat your high score by surviving for as long as possible. Battle Mode is a local multiplayer versus mode for up to two players to compete against each other, as you try to send garbage balls to your opponent’s playing field to win.
Rusty Spout Rescue Adventure features an in-game achievements system with 28 objectives to complete. These objectives include things such as unlocking all extra characters in Story Mode, completing each of the five worlds in Story Mode, defeating the bosses, completing Story Mode without using any extra credits, playing in Endless Mode, and collecting thousands and thousands of balls, for losing a game in story Mode, for playing Endless Mode in Easy, Normal, and Hard and managing to get your name in the high score list for each of said difficulties, and for playing ten games in Battle Mode.
Rusty Spout Rescue Adventure is a colorful, fun arcade-style bubble popping puzzle game with a good challenge, 50 Story Mode stages and boss battles to complete, and an Endless Mode, 28 achievements to unlock, all for a very affordable $6.99 asking price.
