My Universe – PET CLINIC CATS AND DOGS is the latest entry in the series on Nintendo Switch from Microids. After working as a fashion designer, my daughter was ready to take on owning their very own pet clinic. The first step will be to name your avatar, selecting its genre, hair color, skin color, the color of its T-shirt, if it will be wearing a stethoscope, the color of its pants, as well as the color of its shoes. Once you’ve taken care of this, you’ll be ready to learn the basics you’ll be applying during your time at the pet clinic. Nerea will help you get started right after you select the name for your brand-new pet clinic!
You’ll move between the different options available for each mission by using the left analog stick. You can check missions with the L button and will be using the A button to make selections and confirm them, with the B button for canceling. Every interaction you’ll have with one of your patients will involve a short minigame to complete. You’ll have a short timer counting down the total time available for you to complete each process, but if you use more time than what the timer shows, that won’t be an issue.
Our first patient was a dog that had unfortunately stepped on a branch, injuring its leg. The first step was to take the magnifying glass from the tray so that we could move it around the screen to observe the different areas of interest. Since we checked the file and learned that the dog stepped on a branch, we moved the cursor on top of its left leg, which cleared the clouds with question marks on them, revealing the wound. After this, it was time to treat the wound by first cleaning it up to then apply an ointment that would keep it from getting an infection. After this, it was time to wrap the wound!
After completing all of the steps, we were shown a screen where Max – the dog – and Isabel – its owner – were informed that the injuries were present on the front left leg. On this screen, we were given three options to choose from to select the diagnose for the pet. While checking these, we noticed that only one of the three options was the right one, since the other two mentioned Max’s fur and stated that the injury was present on its right leg. After selecting the right option, it was time to say goodbye to Max… right before taking care of the next patient!
The better you do at each section of the complete treatment, the more coins you’ll earn. You’ll also receive gifts that can consist of extra coins, or for paintings, you can hang around the clinic to decorate. The coins can be spent to upgrade your clinic, improving the different rooms, or build new areas that will allow you to take better care of your potential patients. A better waiting room and a bigger diagnostics room will make it possible to provide a better service, and you can also decorate your work area with a plant or two, or add some toys to decorate, to make it all feel cozier.
Another patient had some worms in its stomach – oh no! -, which required us to work on a mix of herbs, vitamins, and other meds, which were then mashed down before being mixed with dog food. This led to a different type of minigame that asked us to press the right directions on the D-Pad during a short rhythm-game style sequence. Once this was completed, our new patient was able to eat it so that it could start to feel a bit better.
There’s Pet Zoo as well, where you can pet and care for as many pets as you want! You’ll be able to interact with the pets you’ve already treated during your time at the pet clinic, so the more you play the main story section of the game, the more pets you’ll be able to pet and treat at the Pet Zoo! With all extra areas of the clinic unlocked – including the exterior area where pets can relax and unwind as they wait for their treatment, you can play for as long as you want to.
My Universe – PET CLINIC CATS AND DOGS is a fun entry in the all-ages My Universe series, with a new career to take on for kids and adults alike. Other than some low resolution textures used for the stickers on medication and herb bottles, as well as for the paintings you can hang around the clinic, there was not much to complain about. Sure, the gameplay cycle is a bit on the linear side of things, but given the target demographic for the game, it will make it easier for kids to get the hang of things as they work on their clinic. My Universe – PET CLINIC CATS AND DOGS is out today on Nintendo Switch with a $29.99 asking price.
