In Sun Wukong Vs Robot from Ratalaika Games, Bitca, and indienova, you’ll be taking on a mini-Metroidvania on PlayStation. Sun Wukong has been imprisoned by four gems that are part of a mind locker that has been placed on his head. To free him, you must find and defeat the bosses that hold power over each of the games. You’ll do this by using the might of your mystical, legendary weapon, striking down foe after foe as you search high and low for those that have trapped you.
You can move with the left analog stick or the D.-Pad, and jump with the X button. Your skill can be used with the Circle button, and you can switch between your available skills by pressing the L1 and R1 buttons. Every time you use a skill, you’ll spend some of your Magic Points. To perform an action, such as XXX, press the Square button. Your Hit Points (HP) and Magic Points (MP) will be displayed in the upper left corner of the screen, as will be your experience points. You can boost your HP and MP total by finding the corresponding upgrades.
You need to keep an eye on your HP because if it runs out, you’ll be taken to the last save point you activated – that is if you remembered to use one! Sun Wukong Vs Robot does not have an autosave feature, so be sure to look for all of the save points the game has to offer so that you can make a record of your progress in case you end up falling in battle. To save, get close to the save point monument and press down on the D-Pad or the left analog stick.
As for the experience points that you collect, these can be used as the in-game currency to purchase HP and MP recovery items, as well as unlock new abilities for your character, such as a very handy double jump. You can change what you’re going to buy from these special spots by hitting the pot with the Square button so that you can switch between the recovery items and the abilities you can purchase.
Since this is a release from Ratalaika Games, that means you can expect to find a full trophy list to work your way through. It’s a short list that includes eleven gold trophies. The requirements are to defeat each of the game’s bosses, to unlock the first three skills in the game, and to purchase and unlock three specific abilities for Sun Wukong: the Shell, Cloud Jump (double jump), and Dash abilities. This is something that should take you around an hour or so to complete.
Sun Wukong Vs Robot is a fun mini-Metroidvania with a good challenge, fun gameplay mechanics, and a solid pixel art style, all for a budget price. Sun Wukong Vs Robot is out on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 for a low $4.99 asking price, making it an easy one to recommend.
