Apple Slash from Ratalaika Games and Agelvik is a bite-sized top-down action game on PlayStation 4 in which you must repel a blob invasion. Blobs are what you’ll be fighting in this one, both small and big, with most of them attacking with melee attacks and one variant shooting at you from a distance by targeting you and unleashing an attack on your general surroundings. You’ll need to hack and slash at everything that moves so that you can make it to the boss and save your village.
You’ll move your knight around with the left analog stick, aiming with the right one as you use your mighty sword to slash away with the R1 button. As you progress through the game, you’ll unlock extra skills you can put to good use to destroy more blobs in less time. These include being able to throw your sword forward, as it deals damage with every spin, being able to drop a huge magical sword on top of your enemies, or sending out energy burst from your sword that will deal chain lighting damage to enemies.
Your hits points will be displayed in the upper right corner of the screen, represented by an apple. You have 50 hit points in total, and every hit you take will lower your hit points. To recover them, you’ll have to collect apple seeds. As you defeat enemies and destroy pots, you’ll add many apple seeds to your stock. For every 50 you manage to collect, you’ll be able to recover some of your lost health by using a special ritual. To do this, you’ll have to be careful about your enemies since you’ll remain in place for a few seconds, leaving you vulnerable.
Apple Slash has a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy, and the good news is that as long as you do everything you can before leaving the area on the boat after the boss, none of the trophies will be missable. The trophies will unlock as you defeat 50, 250, 500, 750, and 1,000 blobs, acquire all special abilities, complete a couple of mandatory quests, defeat the final boss – which, yes, is a very large blob -, finding a secret area for which you’ll have to collect four keys, and then the last one for beating the game.
Apple Slash is a solid bite-sized action game that is fun to play on PlayStation 4. The game is cross-buy, so if you have a PlayStation 5, there will be two Platinum trophies for you to unlock since each version of the game has a separate trophy list. It’s a game you can complete in an hour or so as you take on a short hack and slash adventure between larger games. Apple Slash is out on PlayStation with a $4.99 asking price.
