I.F.O from Turtle Cream and Total Battery is a fun minimalist shoot ‘em up that pays homage to old-school LCD portables. You’ll be tasked with using your plane to fight against the aliens who are abducting animals and attacking everywhere! Do you have what it takes to save Earth from the evil aliens before it’s too late? The game was originally launched for the Nintendo 3DS back in 2018, and it’s now getting a Nintendo Switch release.
The controls are extremely easy to understand. Since your plane fires automatically, you’ll only have to worry about two buttons. You can make the plane turn left by pressing the ZL button, or have it turn right by pressing the ZR button. You can also change to the Type 2 control scheme where you’ll use the L and R buttons. If you’re playing in Portable or Tabletop, you can use the buttons on each side of the screen and press them to make your plane turn left or right as needed. If you press both turn buttons at the same time, then your plane will accelerate.
When capturing an alien that is trying to escape from a UFO, you will be rewarded with a boost to your weapons thanks to the alien’s mysterious powers. You should also make sure that you rescue any of the kidnapped animals, since this will boost your score and can also grant you a power-up, such as powerful exploding mines, a wave weapon with a short but wide range, making it possible for your plane to shoot in four directions, launching powerful missiles, or adding a powerful drill that can cut through anything on its path.
I.F.O also has an in-game achievements system with 12 objectives for you to complete. These include shooting down 50 UFO during a single run, capturing 80 aliens in one play, rescuing 10 animals in one run, reaching a max combo, reaching max power, increasing your max life, shooting down three different bosses, scoring 100,000 points, playing the game 100 times, and one final secret achievement you’ll have to find out on your own!
In the settings menu you’ll be able to tailor your experience by balancing out the volume for the music and sound effects, activate or remove the scratch effect from the screen, or pick between the 15 different options for the colors for the borders surrounding the game’s screen and its two buttons at the lower left and lower right side of the screen.
I.F.O is a fun minimalist shoot ‘em up that pays homage to old-school LCD portables. It features a very easy control scheme and a good challenge that will keep you coming back for more. You can replay the game to try and get your name in the online daily ranking, the weekly ranking, or the all-time ranking. I.F.O is available on Nintendo Switch at a budget price of $3.99.
