The Smurfs – Mission Vileaf from Microids and IMPS is a new 3D platformer based on the beloved series. This time around, the evil wizard Gargamel has gotten his hands on a just as evil plant: the Vileleaf! This plant produces toxic Viletrap seeds that have the power to attract and imprison Smurfs! On top of this, the Viletrap plants also pose a huge danger to the forest since they’re very toxic, especially for the sarsaparilla fields! This is bad news for all Smurfs and for the forest’s inhabitants.
Because of all this, Papa Smurf asks some of the Smurfs to help him find the ingredients needed for creating a super-powerful antidote that can help all of the sick plants recover before it’s too late. To help you on your adventure, you’ll be using the Smurfizer that Handy Smurf has created to aid you on this new adventure. You’ll be playing this one as Smurfette, Brainy Smurf, Chef Smurf, and Hefty Smurf as you save the Smurfs that have been trapped by the evil plants.
You’ll move your Smurf with the left analog stick, jumping with the B button, which is also used for interacting. You can move the camera around with the right analog stick so that you can get a better look at each area you visit, resetting it by pressing in on the stick. The Y button will be for the SmurfSprint so that you can run at a faster pace. The A button is for a SmurfSplat, which can be used after jumping to make your Smurf do a stomp. Since you’ll have this vacuum contraption, you can use the ZR button to heal affected plants.
When playing The Smurfs – Mission Vileaf by using the local co-op mode, the second player will control a small robot that can help the Smurf player by moving around with the left analog stick, jumping with the B button, or hovering by pressing and holding down the button. It can also unleash a shockwave with the ZL button and use the ZR button to spray the antidote. You do need to know that each player will require to have a “complete” controller for the local co-op – that is, each player will need a pair of Joy-Con controllers or use a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
The Smurfs – Mission Vileaf is a fun all-ages 3D action platformer with plenty of content for fans to enjoy. It’s a colorful journey with a full voice acted cast, plenty of collectibles to find, upgrades to unlock for the Smurfs and for the Smurfizer, and an interesting setup that is a good fit for the lore of The Smurfs. My kids had a great time playing this one, alternating between controlling The Smurfs and the helper robot to help them destroy the Viletrap plants that had invaded the land. The Smurfs – Mission Vileaf is out in Europe and will release in the Americas on November 16 at a $39.99 price.
This Smurfs – Mission Vileaf review is based on a Nintendo Switch copy provided by Microids.
