Asterix & Obelix: Slap them All! from Microids and Mr. Nutz Studio is a gorgeous and fun beat ‘em up on Nintendo Switch. You’ll once again go out on an adventure to defend your small village from the Romans – who should have learned their lesson by now. Up to two players can enjoy this journey in local co-op as they explore a gorgeous world full of hand-drawn locations and characters. The game is based on Asterix & Obelix stories you all know and love, with one story chapter being created specifically for this game!
The game can be played in one of four difficulty settings: Easy, Medium, Hard, and Hardest, with a challenge that increases at a steady pace, without ever feeling overwhelming. You can pick which difficulty you want to play on by pressing the Y button when you’re about to select the safe file on which you’ll play. After this, you can pick between the agile and strong Asterix, or the not as nimble but twice as powerful Obelix. If you’re new to the series, this is because Obelix fell into a pot of the magic potion that gives the Gauls their superhumans strength and invincibility, thus permanently giving him all of its benefits.
Once you’ve picked your character, you’ll move around each stage with the left analog stick or the D-Pad, attacking with the D-Pad for some good, old-fashioned beat ‘em up combos. You can jump with the B button and then press the Y button for an air attack. Some of your actions will consume energy, such as doing a charge attack by double-tapping left or right or blocking by pressing the R button. Each character also has special attacks that consume energy, which can be used by pressing down, right, or up and the X button.
Asterix and Obelix also have some separate attacks that are unique to each character. Obelix can do a powerful stomp by jumping and pressing the X button while in mid-air, and he can also do a very powerful three-hit combo – with each hit requiring an energy charge – by pressing the X button on its own. If you press and hold down the X button, Asterix can do a powerful spin attack that will damage all enemies around him, and he can also use it while jumping. Asterix can grab an enemy with the A button and swing him around, while Obelix will grab an enemy to throw him, mash it onto the ground, or slap him around for a bit.
Asterix & Obelix: Slap them All! is a gorgeous and fun beat ‘em up on Nintendo Switch. It does not aim to reinvent the wheel, so it pays homage to the template set by the classics in the genre, such as Final Fight and the first games in the Streets of Rage series on the Sega Genesis. Its hand-drawn presentation for each location you’ll visit and all the characters you’ll meet help to make the game look as close as possible to the books and the animated series. If you’re a fan of beat ‘em ups and of the beloved Asterix & Obelix, then Asterix & Obelix: Slap them All! is a must-play. The game is out now on Nintendo Switch with a $29.99 price.
