Gearshifters from Red Phantom Games is a top-down vehicle-combat shoot ’em up with a roguelite spin. Learn more in our Gearshifters review!

Gearshifters from Red Phantom Games is a top-down vehicle-combat shoot ’em up with a roguelite spin. It feels a bit like a shoot ’em up because of its gameplay mechanics and how you should definitely destroy everything that moves, but it’s certainly a vehicle-combat game as well. You’ll see this as soon as you take the wheel and feel your vehicle’s weight as you drive around each road, as well as the physics that affect how it handles. But yeah, it has guns you can use to destroy everything around you! The studio previously gave us the addictive puzzle game Minutes, so this is definitely very different from that!

The car itself is a weapon, and if you time things right, you can use it to destroy an enemy with a powerslide move. You’ll steer your car with the left analog stick or the D-Pad, using the X button to fire your main weapon. At first, this is all you’ll be able to do, but as you progress in the game, you’ll be able to unlock a secondary weapon, a spin, a hard bake, go in reverse, and the aforementioned powerslide move. This is the Gerarshifters’ way of easing you into things so that you don’t feel overwhelmed about having to do too many things at once.

Manage to survive and complete a stage, and you’ll get to pick one assist from the available options. This could include a new schematic or a power-up to use for the next stage, such as a protector to lower incoming damage by 20% when your vehicle’s overall integrity is below 50%, or even get some extra money! Choose wisely because you will never know what you’ll be going up against for the next stage. As a heads-up, selecting a protector right before a boss fight could definitely be a good option.

You can play the game in one of three difficulty settings. There’s Standard, which is the regular experience. For this one, if your car is destroyed, the current mission is forfeit, and you’ll be returned to HQ, with your overall progress and unlocks persisting. Arcade offers a shorter overall play time with checkpoint progression so that if your car is destroyed, the game will continue from the start of that stage. Deadly, as you can imagine, is the one with permadeath. If your ca is destroyed, then it’s game over, and you’ll have to start over!

Schematics can be used to build new stuff, as long as you have enough coins to pay for it! The more schematics you collect, the more options you’ll have for your vehicle. If you see a red icon pop-up after destroying an enemy, be sure to grab it since that’s a schematic! So as soon as you spot that icon, rush towards it before it exits the screen. But before you buy something, you should definitely cover the cost of repairing your vehicle, or else you’ll start the next stage with the same health with which you completed the last stage!

What can you do with schematics? You could change your vehicle’s main weapon from the starting light machine guns to a pair of powerful shotguns that pack ten times the punch but which will have a lower fire rate, a longer cooldown period when overheated, and will also have a shorter range. You can also add a secondary weapon, depending on what you need. I suggest a pair of rear guns as your first secondary weapon since they will allow you to attack enemies as they come at you from behind, which will make a huge difference! There’s also the option of customizing your vehicle’s look by changing its color or the wheels it uses if you’ve found the schematics for it.

Gearshifters has a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy. It’s split into 21 Bronze trophies, 12 Silver trophies, and 4 Gold trophies. You’ll unlock trophies as you complete a mission in each section of the map, destroy an enemy with a powerslide, destroy an enemy with a reverse attack, purchase 10 weapons, use 15 different boosts, purchase 10 charge abilities, destroy 50 enemies with melee attacks, acquire 20,000 currency, equip your car with an upgrade, equip a secondary weapon, defeat each of the bosses in the game, and more.

After checking out the trailer for Gearshifters, and since I had fun with Red Phantom Games’ Minutes, I was eager to give this one a go, and I’m here to report that it’s a fun and hectic top-down vehicle-combat shoot ’em up with a dash of roguelite that makes it easier for things to quickly click with you. You’re going to die in this one if you don’t plan your upgrades, and depending on the difficulty in which you play, that can have deadly consequences. Gearshifters is out on PlayStation 4 with a $29.99 asking price.
